my fiancee is schizophrenic (sp?) and has been off his meds for a while, well now it has escalated to the point that he needs to be seen by a doctor, asap. so his dad is going to take him to the ER to have him seen by a psych on call doctor. what is the process that they will go thru to admit him and such? i've never been in a situation like this before, so i don't know what happens. the lady at the doctors told me that he'll go to the hospital, see if he needs help and then admit him for inpatient care for a few days to get him back on his meds and straitened out a bit. what happens during that stay? will he be in the regular hospital or in their sister hospital which is a psychiatric hospital? i have no clue what happens after he gets to the ER... please someone help me. =:(

  1. First dont worry, if he gets to hospital, sees a psychiatrist and gets the help he needs he will be fine.  I know it does not seem like it but he will be fine.  Trust me, I have been there.  I am recovering from a mental ilness, you never get cured, just recover.

He will be assessed.  I presume you are in the UK?  If he agrees, he will be a voluntary patient and taken to a place of saftey in a psychiatric hospital - they are not Victrorian Gaols anymore, they are places for humans.  If he does not agree he may be sectioned under the mental health act.

Either way he will get the treatment he needs, he will be stabilised by the drugs and counselling and he will then be fine.  You should be able to visit him and see him as you want to.  Dont fret dont worry.  If he gets the help he needs he will be fine.  Stick with him, let him know you trust him, love him and he can trust you.  He needs you all to keep him safe in his heart as well as his mind.

  2. If the Doctor's feel he is a threat to himself or other's then yes they will have him admitted to a Psychiatric Hospital. There he will get evaluated by a Doctor get back on his meds, go to group therapy, individual therapy, and he'll get released when the Doctor's there think he is no longer a threat to himself or others. I had to go through this with my daughter.

You'll both be fine. Just make sure he gets the help that he needs

  3. They'll simpley evaluate his state of mind and determine the best course of action from there.  They'll need to determine if he is competent or not.  Some schizophrenics stop taking medication when they feel good.  They think "I'm just as balanced as any one else, why am I taking these meds?"  Then they get unbalanced again and the whole cycle starts over again.

During a psychiatric hospitalization, he will received psychiatric care and his mental status will be monitored.  Once he he is balanced again he'll be released.

There are many web sites about schizophrenia if you do a google search.  Since you are in a relationship with someone with this disorder, you really should learn as much as you can about this condition.  If this is a long term relationship, you may want to seek out support groups.  The psych hospital can probably refer you if you can't find one online.
