Bubba has 16 dimes and nickels, of which X are nickels. Find the total value of the coins in dollars. thanks!

If there are 16 total coins and X are nickels then (16 - X) are dimes.  So their value in dollars, since a nickel is worth $0.05 and a dime $0.10, is

0.05X + 0.10 (16 - X)

If you need this simplified, it's

0.05X + 1.6 - 0.10X

which is 1.6 - 0.05X dollars

There's not enough information here to say what the value of his coins are.  Do you know what X is?  The value would have to be somewhere between $0.80 (all nickels) and $1.60 (all dimes).  That's all I can say from the information above.
