  1. If there are 16 total coins and X are nickels then (16 - X) are dimes.  So their value in dollars, since a nickel is worth $0.05 and a dime $0.10, is

    0.05X + 0.10 (16 - X)

If you need this simplified, it's

    0.05X + 1.6 - 0.10X

    which is 1.6 - 0.05X dollars

  2. 3 dollars and 40 cents

  3. There's not enough information here to say what the value of his coins are.  Do you know what X is?  The value would have to be somewhere between $0.80 (all nickels) and $1.60 (all dimes).  That's all I can say from the information above.

  4. $1.60 + .05x

  5. (.05)x + .10(16-x)

    .05x + 1.60 - .10x

    -.05x + 1.60 = total value
