I'm really excited good and in bad ways. We havent had rain here in south Texas. I'm from Brownsville and the National Weather Channel says that Dolly is going to become stronger once it hits the Gulf of Mexico waters and turn into a Hurricane. We are right in the middle of the pathway..Do you know if its really gonna hit or can it make a sudden turn?? What important things should I go buy right now or should I even worry?? Help me out please!!! What kind of battery operated radio should I buy and where at?? My husband is not even worried, I guess since this always happens where a storm comes and then totally turns somewhere else..he doesnt believe it...It's supposed to hit today and last until Thursday morning!!

  1. yes, it is going to hit you if you are less than 70 miles from the coast it will cause damage and possibly power outages and interruptions in your water service, you should always be prepared to go 3 days without gas, water and electricity so if you can still get it you'll need water, canned goods, a radio and plenty of batteries, flashlight and candles, before it hits fill up a trashcan with water for flushing the toilet fill your tub, sinks etc with water, a cooler of ice for anything in your fridge, a small stove, you get the idea you should be prepared for 3 days without services, during the storm you should go to a shelter and get your animals in a safe kennel

  2. It is a bit late but you should have a home emergency kit handy.  Common problems caused by hurricanes are power outages, roof damage and flooding.  You should be prepared with plenty of fresh water (in case the drinking water gets contaminated by sewage overflow) food for three days that is ready to eat or easily made ready to eat expecially food that does not require refrigeration such as canned soups, crackers, canned stews etc.  If you are in a flood area, prepare a quick evacuation bag such as a back pack loaded with important items you will need if you have to evacuate.  This would include, credit cards, cash, important papers like deeds, birth certificates and insurance policies.

Special consideration for any pets who may not be welcome in public shelters. If you must leave your pet behind, make sure they have plenty of dry food and fresh water on the top floor of the house to stay healthy until you can return.  Also a protected area away from their food for waste disposal.

If you will be able to stay home, have a large plastic tarp handy in case the roof is damaged, a first aid kit in case any people or pets are injured or you need to provide assitance to a neighbor.  Also, flashlights, spare batteries, storm lanterns, candles and of course matches to light them.

Any battery operated AM/FM radio will do.  The best are radios featuring weather alert funciton.  Make sure you cell phones are fully charged.  BTW- even if you cannot get a cell call through, you can still send a text message.  The message will wait and find its destination once the lines are clear.

No need to panic.  Just be prepared to be at worst able to safely evacuate and at the best, a little inconvienced.  Even if your home is completely spared, roads may be flooded, trees down etc.  So be prepared to last at least three days without power, city water or outside assistance.
