A 26.27 g sample of a solid is placed in a flask. Toluene, in which the solid is insoluble, is added to the flask so that the total volume of the solid together is 50.00 mL. The solid and toluene together have a mass of 52.65 g. The density of the toluene at the experimental temperature is 0.864 g/mL. What is the density of the solid? Please show your work if possible.

  1. Since we are given the mass of solid and toluene as well as the mass of the solid, we can find the mass of toluene

Since we know the density of toluene, we can find its volume

Since we know the total volume, we can back-calculate the volume of the solid.

Since we know the volume and mass of solid, we can find its density.

Now you do the work and kick yourself for not figuring this out yourself.

  2. You shd be able to figure this out...just follow it stepwise:

    W of sample + W of tol = 52.65g

    W tol = 52.65 - 26.27 = 26.38g

    V tol = 26.38g / 0.864g/mL = 30.53 mL

    So V spl = 50.00 - 30.53 = 19.47 mL

    Density of spl = 26.27g / 19.47mL = 1.349g/mL
