this is the problem:

During the week a man travels 3 1/2, 1 1/4, 1 1/6, and 2 3/8 miles. The next week he travels 1/4, 3/8, 9/16, 3 1/16, 2 5/8, and 3 3/16 miles. How many miles did he travel the second week than the first week?...

Can you please tell me how to solve this problem!?

Thank you!!

  1. first you need to add up fractions !!???

    first week he traveled

    7/2+5/4+7/6+19/8

    =199/24 is about 8.2917 miles

    the second week he traveled

    1/4+3/8+9/16+49/16+21/8+51/16

    =161/16  is about 10.0625 miles

    the he traveled

    10.0625 - 8.2917=1.7708 miles

more in the second week than in the first week.

  2. Looks like an exercise in adding fractions.

         3 1/2 + 1 1/4 + 1 1/6 + 2 3/8

    =   7/2 + 5/4 + 7/6 + 19/8

bringing onto a common denominator using

         the least common multiple, 24

    =  (84 + 30 + 28 + 57)/24

    =  199/24

    And,

         1/4 + 3/8 + 9/16 + 3 1/16 + 2 5/8 + 3 3/16

    =   1/4 + 3/8 + 9/16 + 49/16 + 21/8 + 51/16

    =   (4 + 6 + 9 + 49 + 42 + 51)/16

    =   161/16

    The answer then is,

       161/16 - 199/24

    = (483 - 398)/48

    = 85/48

    = 1 37/48 miles

which in decimals would be 1.77 ( rounded off) miles.

    Hope this helps.

  3. ok first u need to get a common denominattor so in this case its 24 then u times the numerator by how many times you needed to times the denomenator to get to 24

    you should end up with 1st week; 3 12/24   1  6/24  1  4/24 and  2 3/24

    u get 8 1/24

    then the second u should go to 32: 8/32   12/32   3  2/32   2  20/32   and 3   6/32

    u get: 9   16/32

    now its 8 1/24 - 9 16/32

    8  3/96 - 9 48/96

now minus the numerator and whole numbers

    1 45/96

    then simplifie if u can

    well good luck :)

email me if u need any more help

  4. add the distances and then subtract.

figure out the total of the first week (turn the mixed numbers into fractions by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and then adding the numerator. then find the common denominator. to find the common denominator, find the least common multiple then times the numerator and denominator of each fraction by the number it would take to get the denominator to the LCM. ie if the LCM is 40 and the denominator is 5, you would times the numerator and the denominator by 8. then after you do that, add the numerators together and put the sum over the denominator.) then do the same for the second week.

now find the common denominator between the first and second week and subtract the first week from the second week (unless it is how many miles less did he travel the second week, then subtract the second week from the first week).

once you are done with that, divide the numerator by the denominator to either get a whole number or a mixed number.

    then you're done =)

  5. find common denominators for all of the fractions for the first week, then add all fractions.

do the same for the second week.

then subtract the answer from the first week from the answer for the second week, and then you have the answer!

  6. How many miles MORE did he travel the second week than the first week.

Add the total miles for the second week.

Add the total miles for the first week.

Subtract the first from the second.

  7. add up the total from the first.

add up the total from the second.

then subtract the total of the first from the total of the second.

    1st.

Convert all of the fractions to their LCD(LCM)(lowest common denominator)

    like 3 1/2 would be 3 x 2 + 1 = 7 so 7/2.
