Aaron has a collection of American coins. He has three times as many 10 cent coins as 25 cent coins, and he has some 5 cent coins as well. If he has 88 coins with total value $11.40, how many of each type does he have?

Please show me how you did it. I got the first part:

10 cent : 3x

25 cent : x

5 cent: 88-4x

What do I do now?

  1. You take into account the additional information you are given:

    "total value $11.40"

    Each dime is worth 10c, each quarter 25c, each nickel 5c

    3x (10) + x (25) + (88-4x) 5 = 1140 (total cents)

    30x + 25x -20x + 440 = 1140

    35x = 700

    x = 20
