well the horse I'm with for 6+ hours a day has a bad fly problem. He seems to be fine with the fly mask covering his eyes and ears but then even MORE flys come. When a single fly touched his face his head goes up and down like what some horses do to nay. When a fly touches his body he twitches. It's VERY annoying and I don't know what to do! Please help me it's URGENT!

  1. A high end fly spray. with a clean barn works wonders!  I use Endure or Happy Horse.  Not cheap at first, but a bottle lasts a month with 2 horses.  There is no homemade cure thats safe or works for horses...

  2. Keep on using that fly mask, and use some fly spray. Make sure you introduce it to him gradually... horses aren't usually fans of having chemicals sprayed all over them. Also, try keeping his stall clean and free of p**p, that's what tends to draw the flies. Make sure you keep his tail long... he needs it for a fly swatter. Another thing, this is just optional, if they're bothering him in the pasture, you can invest in some stuff that is safe for horses, you put it in the water trough and it kills all of the fly eggs that are already in there. I haven't used it but some friends reccomend it. Other than that, horses just draw flies naturally and there's not much than what I just said then you can do to stop them. Good luck!

  3. fly spray all over the body and keep the fly mask on

  4. fly spray helps some, and so does a fly sheet. first ask the owner of the horse though. ALSO- RECOMMEND FLY PREDATORS TO THE OWNER OF THE PROPERTY... VERY USEFUL! I'VE ONLY SEEN ABOUT 5 FLIES THIS WHOLE SUMMER SO FAR ON MY HORSES... I HAVE 3. HELPS LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE!

  5. In addition to a flymask and spray, it may help to install a fan in his stall that produces a stiff breeze... the flies don't like flying through the wind (if your horse is smart enough to stand in front of the fan, lol). You can also try getting a fly blanket- it looks like a scrim sheet but you can get one that wraps under the belly, too.

You can spray the flymask with fly spray before you put it on your horse, too.

If that doesn't work, smear Vaseline all over his face, neck, and belly. That way the flies can't make it to his skin.

  6. Well, for longer-term planning, I've heard excellent things about fly predators. They do something (eat, or somehow kill) the fly eggs in the manure before they can hatch, and are not all that expensive. I've heard people swear by these things, but also have heard that you have to start using them just before the fly season begins for the best results.

  7. my vet recently told me about a fly solution called fly predators. its a type of bug you release into the environment and the bugs lay eggs in the flys larva killing them. she has used it and loves it! i ordered some and can't wait to get it by the way she talks, it works great. there is also types of fly soultions you can get that you mix in with the horses food and it helps to control flies. i'm not sure of the name, just research it. a problem would be if their are other horse farms close by that don't control the flies. if that is the case, there will always be flies but you can try the above and it would at least help some.

fly spray would help for probably about 2 hrs and then it wears off.

  8. fly spray! I use pirahna fly spray and it works a lot better than most of the other ones i have tried.

  9. fly spray and keep him VERY clean... the flies eat the manure on him so make sure he is immaculate and spray every few hours

  10. Definitely try fly spray... and continue using the fly mask... That's all my knowledge has to offer, sorry... :)

  11. well fly sprays a must. Try getting read of the Flys them self.Getting read of the horse p**p outta the stall will help and trying those new fly predators might do the trick.

  12. well you could allways buy garlic it really does work but it stinks or even BUGSTOP works welll. My mare was ridden through a bee's nest when her second owner bought her and now she will throw her head up and fly back so We started with a fly mask it helped but then we went to garlic and we saw a 50% decrease of flys within the first month.. dont forget to use fly spray ontop of the garlic. They also sell fly bonnets for when your riding they work wonders..
