I just bought a Border collie X Greyhound pup. He's about 14 weeks old and he's terrible when left in a room on his own :( He barks for ages until someone goes in the room with him. It's getting really frustrating and causing alotta tension in meh house =[ I understand hes only a pup and has been taken away from his mother but is there anything i can do to try and stop him doing this? Ive given him toys and he isnt interested, food aswel. I can't get anything scented of his mother because we arent in touch with the owner. We tried leaving him to see if he gets bored but he doesn't. Please help =/

  1. You need to get him a old fashioned alarm clock to help keep him company, it will simulate the mother dog's heartbeat, just ignore him.  He will eventually get the idea that his negative behavior is not being rewarded with positive attention.  Also try putting a hot water bottle in with him which will also simulate the mother dog's body heat

  2. Dogs like to den...get him a crate and put a blanket or a dog bed in it.  The other responder was right.  You need to get him used to being alone.  Put him in jis crate and leave him for just a few minutes.  If he doesn't bark/whine...go in and give LOTS of praise and maybe treats to let him know that he was good.  You have already let him know that barking will get you to come to him, you need to reverse that.  If he barks, stand outside the door and say NO every time he barks.  Once he stops, even just for the shortest of time, you need to praise him.  Dogs have no concept of time, they live in the moment.  You must be right on top of it.  When he stops barking you need to IMMEDIATLY go in and praise him.  As long as he is barking, you need to ignore him.  A dog is a ton of work if you want him to be well behaved.  You will need to put in the time and effort to train him.  If you are not willing, you need to give him up.  Call a trainer...you obviously need help from a professional.

  3. There is a lot you can do but there is one think I liked a lot is that you leave toys in there. You leave the room for about 10 sec then come back in, leave again come back in and do that a few times then change it to about 30 sec then 1 min then 5 min, it just sounds like the dog has separation anxietie so you need to show the puppy that you will come back.

  4. Firstly you have already showed him that barking incessantly will  eventually get him what he wants, which is you in the room with him. He should have a crate, not a whole room. Leave on radio on for some background noise. Maybe a clock that ticks loudly may be helpful.

  5. Explain why he is left in a room by himself. This may help

  6. you can put a muzzle on him for 1 hour then u can take it off and keep him on his bed not yours

  7. you could try putting him in a crate? Then he would have his own little spot to be comfortable in.

Or you could leave him in the room and then come back after a few seconds. Then leave the room and come back again quickly. then slowly increase the time. Not sure if that would work but you could try? That way he gets more used to being alone.

  8. u should spent time with him like your his mother. he need attion. form u give him food from your hand or like put it in his mouth. he think he is boss. no! stop. or smak in in the butt that teach him not to bark.not to hard or soft. do the finger and say no. play with him grap a toy and sqees the toy and run with it. stamp your feet and say its name in a good why.then when i leave the room and bark come in and say no! bad boy.then smak him softly. then go out then when he dose not bark then give him a treat and say good boy a play with  him a little pat him or something like that. when he is hving fun he will somtime for get his mother. that beaces your his new mother now! hope this help!

  9. When I first adopted my dog, the shelter gave us this collar, it looks like a flea collar almost and it mimics the pheromones of a female dog (like a mother).. worked wonders to keep him calm!!!!!!

  10. Well try leaving him with something that smells like you so he still smells you.
