  1. The number for the interquartile range doesn't have to be a number that actually occurs in the data.  It's the difference of the numbers that occur as the first quartile and the third quartile.

First, it might be easier for you to figure out if you were to convert the numbers from the stem and leaf plot to their actual values.  For a stem of 1 and leaves of 356 (what I think you're showing in your first row) the stem is the first number, and each of the leaves are the second number for 3 numbers (1 + 3, 1 + 5, and 1 + 6 - not by addition, but by pairing the numbers) and you get 13, 15, and 16

Your second row would be 23, 24, and 28.

The third row would be 33, 38, and 38.

The last row would be 43.

Now put all in consecutive order and figure out where the to divide the set into fourths (quartiles):

    13

    15

    16 - Q1

    23

    24

    ************ 1/2

    28

    33

    38 - Q3

    38

    43

    Now subtract Q1 from Q3:  38-16 = 22

So your answer would be a. 22.
