Ship A is steaming at 10 knots and picks up ship B on radar 8 miles ahead on the same course. One hour later, ship B is 6 miles ahead. From that point, how long will it take ship A to overtake ship B? What is the speed of ship B? (One knot is one mile per hour).

  1. Jusme is exactly right.

Ship A will overtake ship B in 3 hours

Ship B speed is at 8 knots

    Great job Jusme!

  2. I don't know if this is right but if it is WOW

if did good Please let me know

Ship A will overtake ship B in 3 hours

Ship B speed is at 8 knots

  3. In one hour ship A gained 2 knotts on ship B, so in three more hours she'll come along side.

Ship A gained 2 knotts on ship B in 1 hour, so ship A is cruising 2 knotts faster than ship B. Ship B is cruising at 8 knotts.

  4. Jusme and Rabid Coyote are correct in their answer.  This doesn't matter in this problem but a "knot" is equal to one nautical mile per hour.

A statute mile mile is 5,280 feet.  This is the common mile which we work with.

A nautical mile is 6,076 feet.
