hello i am a 21 year old girl from liverpool and in uni studying french and spanish! for my semester abroad in spain i have decided on 1st choice barcelona and 2nd choice valencia.

The problem is I really can't decide about France!!!! I am worried about moving away.. and worried about which city to go for! Would Paris be too busy and unfamiliar? Is Aix a bit rough? Is Dijon boring? Lyon looks lovely but is it a nice place to live??

I also want to make the most out of speaking French as much as possible and am worried that this will not happen in Paris

Any ideas? Thanks !x

  1. in my opinion ( I've study in paris, aix and lyon where I live today) Paris is too busy and that's pretty hard to make relationships. aix and dijon are such small town, you'll get bored. Lyon is perfect, due to its location, its tall ( a human city) its people.... u can have fun when you want, and it's quiet when you gotta workout. Moreover, "lyonnais" don't have accent and so are "compréensible"

    Enjoy your french trip

PS: lyon is the french gastronomy center!!!

  2. Aix for the student life, sunny climate and mediterranean ambiance.

Lyon, a bigger city, but with harder climate - for its localisation: proximity with Alps, Italy, Switzerland, both northern France and southern France...  unluke Paris which is very excentred far away in the north

Paris for the big world-city life, culture, museums, romaticism, etc.

  3. Yikes. Lots of questions. First, I'll be honest with you. I've only ever been to Paris (and a few locations/attractions not far from Paris), and with my French class. It was very intimidating, and I knew quite a bit of French, but once I got used to it, I was making the best of it. I learned a ton of French that single week I was there!

Consider words I recall my French teacher saying: If you want to learn the language, live in the southern areas of French, where they speak the language slower.

Hope that helps. Good luck, and have fun!

  4. Don't know Aix or don't remember. Dijon is a bit boring. Lyon is beautiful. But Paris is the best for your goal as Parisian French is the roughest to learn.

Worried about speaking too much English, just don't hang out with other Brits or Americans.
