On Amazon (and other places), you can find very affordable Digital8 camcorders.  They are still available from Sony, and several models include Nightshot IR illuminator technology for recording in 0 lux conditions.  The next generation Nightshot camcorders can see the night in color instead of the green or gray of older models.

Digital8 camcorders are updated versions on 8mm and Hi-8 cameras.  The Digital8 camera can read and use standard 8mm, Hi8, and digital8 casettes.
