I live in Nicaragua which is in Central America. I found this snake while showering with it! I'm 9 months pregnant and I would like to know more about this snake; for example, it's name, is it venomous, etc. especially now that there is a baby around! I'd prefer not to kill any snake if it's not venomous. The snake looked like a baby, it was roughly 18 inches long and maybe a half inch thick. It's whole body was black (head included) apart from the yellow rings. The locals refer to it as a "coral *****" (black coral) and say it's quite venomous, but online I found no such snake. Please help!

Here are two pictures:

  1. My curiosity fueled a quick search of the net.

Check this site out. There is a couple of photos of snake that looks like yours...

Do a search of the Blunt-headed tree snake (Imantodes cenchoa).

I'm not sure if this is it, but it's a start.

    Good luck and congratulations.

  2. its not a coral snake. I think the way you described it made people think it was a coral by saying it was black with yellow rings. Coral snakes are red, black, and yellow but your snake is more of a brown.

  3. The coral snakes here in Florida are very very venomous but they look nothing like that. Heres a coral snake. They are all over the place in Florida.

  4. You really stirred my interests. It is Leptodeira nigrofasciata.

This snake pictured is in the same genus so if this thing doesn't have poisen yours doesn't and this appears to be constricting something. But please don't touch it or get bit.

  5. im stumped. an educated guess  is milk snake . hope you get a definitive  answer.

p.s. "locals" normally think all snakes are venomus.  there are  2700 snake species , 375 of them are venomous chances this one is venomous is small.  at nine months pregnant you shouldnt worry needlessly.  good luck.

  6. well if the locals say it's venomous i would believe them.  better safe than sorry especially with a baby
