  2. www.tourismofindia.com

  3. I think Kottayam is better than Kochi.  Because, now in Kottayam there are plenty of opportunities in supper marker business. If you have take the competition and risk you have try in Kochi.

  4. KOCHI: Competition in the retail sector is hotting up in Kochi. Fashionable malls and multi-purpose shopping outlets are coming up even in the farthest corners of the city. New players with innovative offers aimed at capturing a larger pie of the market are entering the scene. It is certainly an exciting phase for the shoppers and the trend is all set to advance further.

The city has a chain of margin-free supermarkets and most have been refurbished to take on the competition. The list of items on the shelves too has been expanding to net a wider clientele.

Fabmall, a chain of new age supermarkets and `convenience stores,' has made its foray into distant corners of the city such as Fort Kochi and Pachalam. The modern stalls are offering special packages and are attracting customers. The chain is said to be taken over by a larger business group, which apparently will bring in renewed vigour in the market.

Varkeys group of supermarkets is on the lookout for expanding their domain. The group had moved to areas that were not thickly populated. This will certainly extend their reach and earn it an early advantage if at all competitors venture to set up shop. The group has already launched an ad campaign highlighting the price advantage.

Subhiksha group of supermarkets will be one of the new entrants waiting in the wings. The supermarket chain has more than 500 outlets across the country. Its strategy is to provide customised services. The price will be 8-10 per cent less than the MRP, a top executive of the group said. The group is planning to enter 10 cities in Kerala in the initial phase.

Spencer's, another prominent group, has already opened a few outlets in the city. Reliance, which had announced its intention to enter the Kerala market, is getting ready for the big day.

More retail players will dot the cityscape in the days ahead. But is there a place for everyone? "There is room for all," says a top executive of a supermarket chain. That perhaps sums up the sentiment of the retails players making a beeline to Kochi and other cities of Kerala.

The competition has sounded the death knell to several small-scale traders. One of the new ventures, a mobile supermarket, operated by an enthusiastic entrepreneur, Talib, had to be wound up in the fierce competition. The venture had served the city for over two years, but could not withstand the onslaught of the new-generation stores that popped up in every nook and cranny of the city.

The episode portends the crisis stalking the retail sector which is set to deepen in the days to come even as the modern chain of stores makes waves across the city, says an entrepreneur who has turned to a new venture in the field of education.

  5. No not in Kerala.*
