well besides the whole slavery thing, before mass production, plantations were the best way to grow as much crop as possible to therefore earn as much money as possible.

But seriously, I am not defending them but a dry economic fact is they create supply which lowers prices. If you are a poor lower class worker in an urban environment who doesn't have time to make you own clothes (this example pertains to cotton plantations) then a cheap shirt is a benefit.

The only thing that comes to mind is that the per capita prison population was probably a lot lower. Beyond that it was an evil system.
