Oak and Hickory would be good , I suppose. What else?

I'm thinking about Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, that part of the country.

  1. The general rule of thumb is hardwoods, like you mentioned - red and white oak (longer burning), and hickory (burns hot but quicker), and staying away from sappy trees like pine and cedar.  Wood burns cleaner and hotter if seasoned, stored six months to a year under cover.  As far as fuel efficiency ranking, these are the top 5:  hickory, oak, black birch, beech, sugar maple.  Softwoods like pine and cedar, while they fire up quick, cause dangerous creosote build-up in the chimney just by the nature of the wood.

  2. Birch is best, Maple and Alder are good too.

Dad use to put a "pitchy" piece of Fir or Hemlock in at night......still good and hot in the morning.

Cedar of course is best for starting firs and we always had a portion of the shed filled with that.

Ahh the work in getten Firewood....wish i was there to help ya!

  4. Cedar.  It really has a great aroma.  Smells like incense.
