  1. For the second problem the width of the frame is 17 in.

    These are the steps to follow:

    Let l = w+8

    2l + 2w = 84 (formula for area)

    2(w+8) + 2w = 84 (substitue l)

    2w + 16 + 2w = 84 (Distribute)

    4w = 84 - 16 (combine like terms)

    4w = 68

    w = 17

  2. distance = speed x time

    You want to know how much time will pass before the distance traveled by train A and train B are the same (If distance of A and distance of B are the same, then speed x time of A and speed x time of B will be the same).

    80(t+3) = 100t

    80t + 240 = 100t

    240 = 20t

    t = 12h (this is the time the second train will have traveled; the first train will travel for 3 more hours = 15 hours)

    They will catch up at 9am the next morning.

    A frame is basically a perimeter:

    2(l+w) = 84

    2(w+8 + w) = 84

    2w + 16 + 2w = 84

    4w = 68

    width =17 inches

  3. The first one > the 2nd train will reach the 1st train at 9AM the following day >  100 mph x12 hours = 1200 miles for train 2 .  For train 1 80 mph x 15 hours = 1200 miles.  Add 15 hrs to 6 PM, or 12 hrs to PM = 9 AM

    PS > you should write >> It's too hard

  4. t is the time the first train travels

    t-3 is the time the second train travels

    Both trains go the same distance and distance=speed*time

    80t=100(t-3)

    80t=100t-300

    20t=300

    t=15 hours

    so 6:00 p.m. plus 15 hours is 9 a.m.

    For the second question:

    perimeter is 2*length + 2*width

    the l=w+8 for this frame so:

    84=2l+2w

    84=2(w+8) +2w

    84=2w+16+2w

    84=4w+16

    68=4w

    w=17

    and l is 17+8 or 25
