My son is 8 months and he has had on average 2 ear infections a month since he was 8 wks old. He has been on several different antibotics and last month the dr. said they were a result of severe allergies. So since last month he has been on claritin and singular once a day. Well low and behold he has another ear infection. So today his dr. referred us to an ear nose and throat specialist 90 miles away to see about having tubes put in his ears. This terrifies me. I dont want him to be put to sleep without me by his side. It brings me to tears to think of how terrified he will be around strange people in a strange place without me. I am aware that without the surgery he could be sujected to hearing loss due to the neverending infections but i cant bear the thought of him being in pain and scared. Please help if youve been in this situation!!! Thanks in advance.

  1. I know how you feel. My daughter had tubes put in at 2 years old. I promise you it will be a lot harder on you than it will be on him. We were sent home with a prescription for tylenol w/ codeine, I gave it to her once before she went to bed that night and she never needed it after that. Most likely they will give him medication to make him "loopy" before they take him off for the IV and really quick surgery, so it won't be too traumatic for him, but that doesn't help you!!! The worst part for us was when the surgery was over and they brought her back in the room. She was coming out of anesthesia and she was hysterical, I thought she was in pain, but it was just her reaction to it wearing off. The next day she was fine and didn't remember any of it. If your son has allergies causing his ear infections, tubes will not make everything okay. My daughter needed 3 surgeries until they realized she had a milk protein allergy. After her tubes were put in (her 1st surgery) her ears never had another infection, but she started getting infection in her sinuses and they had to go in twice to open her sinus cavity. But this was all BEFORE they knew she had an allergy. Once we removed milk from her diet, she has not been sick once and she'll be 5 in a few weeks. Has he had the skin tests to figure out what it is he is allergic to?

edit: all along the doctors were telling me she had seasonal allergies and would give her allergy medications. Then she was later diagnosed with asthma and was on steriods. She had neither of these. As soon as he's old enough for the skin prick tests you should get them done! My daughter was sick non stop since she was one until we had the skin tests done. And the results are immediate so no additional waiting. Once she got them done, it took care of everything. Good luck!

  2. The tubes will only help your baby. I have a son that went threw that and he is now 8. And is doin better. But he still has bad allergies.

  3. My youngest girl had tubes in her ears. We waited in the hall. Only took about an hour. She was a bit older than 8 months, but believe me, the tubes are heaven sent compared to running her to the hospital every week, especially on the week ends. The time I spent waiting is nothing. Her crying in pain was heart wrenching.Shes young. Get it done. Don't risk having serious damage happen to her because you don't want to be with out her. Believe me, she'll be ok.

  4. he will not be there without you for long. My oldest son had eye surgery at 4 years old. we stayed in pre-op with him  until they took him to anesthesia. they let us go into the recovery room as soon as they knew he was waking up.

when my youngest son was 19 months old he broke his leg. they had to put him under to set it and put the cast on. They let me stay with him until a few minutes before the surgery. they let me sit at his bedside (in his room) for the time it took him to wake up. both of them were barely aware that I was ever gone.

your best bet is to talk to the ENT or someone at the hospital and find out how far you can go with your son. they may let you walk with him to the doors of the OR, or maybe suit up and go in until he is under anesthesia.
