ok heres the deal. ill try to keep it short. i want to be a record prodcuer. i got a "job" assisting a producer. thing is, i dont like working for people and hes asking me to do things like drive 50 miles to meet him and his client somewhere and i dont want to.

hes having me do technical, which i absolutely hate. another thing is, him and his clients are all over 40 year old. im 22. him and his clients havent scored one hit song since theyve been working.

am i wasting me time? should I go on my own and try to make it.

the client does have a few connections that mite make it worth it. and i aslo want to start and run a record label. i dont care how the industries changed, i just wanna work for myself. please give me some advice. thanks

  1. Well as a producer you will always be working for people. Rather it is the next big hit artist or the musician who thinks they are all that and really aren't. So now is a good time to learn to work for others.

While working for artists there will be times when you not only will need to travel 50 miles but sometimes even further.

As the producer you will need to know and understand the technical side. This will allow you to understand the engineer while getting the music mastered. So overall I don't think you are wasting your time.

Now advise - Your best direction is to work with a producer for 3 years before trying to do it alone. That doesn't necessarily mean the same guy you are working for now though. So for now get those contacts build them and stay in touch with them. In a few months after working with this guy on at least 3 different clients start looking into studios and who they use as producers. Network get to know each one until you find the one that will be the right fit for the next couple of years.

The whole time market yourself as a producer willing to work for less. This will garner you some work of your own from artists who can't afford the big bucks. Great to add to any resume.
