  1. How do you know your rabbit has worms? there are worm treatments you can buy that dont need vet consultations. Alternatively you could take him into a local vet clinic to weigh him, and ask their advice for some rabbit wormers without going in for a consultation.

A small pet consult will vary in price from vet clinic to vet clinic- I usually pay between $10 a consult (god I LOVE those vets!!!) to $35 a consult depending on which vet I go to and what needs to be done. You are better off talking to a vet that has some knowledge in small animals, otherwise the vet may give you the wrong advice.

From there you would have to pay extra for the medicine. You can look up a phone directory and talk to the vets to ask what price a consult is and see if they can give you any advice on worming over the phone. good luck

  2. Is it embedded in the skin? And popping out to breathe air? If so that is pretty common in rabbits, and although a vet will need to remove it, it isn't life threatening. The worm (actually, in this case maggot) keeps the area clean and free from infection. Doctors actually use maggots in humans to help prevent infections... They eat the dead tissue so bacteria don't get to it.

I found a kitten by my house with one in its cheek. The vet just grabbed it with forceps and pulled. This huge white maggot popped out. The kitten was given antibiotics, just in case. Also because it had fleas too, and was only about 4 weeks old. Might have had a cold too.... was in rather rough shape!

Again, if it is a worm embedded in the skin peeking out to breath, just relax.... your rabbit is fine. Flies lay an egg in the rabbits skin and the maggot hatches, grows then becomes a fly and leaves the rabbit who will be only a little worse for wear. It still needs treatment, but really isn't that much worse than having fleas. I don't think the treatment was very expensive, maybe $30 for the actual maggot removal. I'm not saying just let the maggot grow to adulthood, just you can relax and breath, it isn't life threatening. :D

I assume you mean a maggot, since if you saw worms in the stool you would use the plural and they would be in the intestine. A worm could not thrive in the actual stomach, but a maggot could certainly live in the belly skin.
