  1. Blood pressure is one of the vital signs that can vary most throughout the day, ideally you should take it after having rested for 5 minutes, not having eaten something for a while and not have had coffee, alcohol or other substances that could alter the value.

Also, it should ideally not be taken at night since it tends to be higher then.

Finally, hypertension is pretty much a chronic illness so I'd check again with another doctor to see if you are in fact hypertense or if the reading was just ****** up.

Finally, commercial automatic sphygmomanometers are not trustable at all... Don't trust a pressure reading unless there's a doctor/nurse with a sthetoscope taking your pressure.

  2. Systole & diastole are not normal according to your age. Coffee increases the  B. P. It will better you go for cardiologist of your city.

  3. A blood pressure of 170/130 mmHg is considered "Stage 2 Hypertension" by he JNC VII guidelines.

Coffee and a doctor's visit itself may have slightly elevated your blood pressure, but it is unlikely that it elevated it to 170/130 from a normal range of 120-130/80-90 mmHg. Thats too much of an elevation to be due to coffee alone.

I think the doctor was absolutely correct in initiating antihypertensive therapy for you. The guidelines that I've referenced below actually advise beginning a dual pharmacotherapy regimen consisting of a thiazide-type diuretic and an ACE inhibitor for stage 2 hypertension. If you disagree, then I encourage you to seek a second opinion, but for now, it is imperative that you don't continually have blood pressures that high. Blood pressures that high can lead to major ischemic events like heart attacks and strokes as well as blindness and kidney failure over time.

It is not impossible to have high blood pressure at your age. Most likely it may stem from genetic factors. I would suggest that you buy an automatic home blood pressure monitor from Walgreens or wherever and take your blood pressure on a daily basis and log the results. This will allow you to see if your blood pressure runs continuously high or if your office visit was indeed just a fluke.

    Best of luck.

  4. check blood pressure again with proper doctor
