I'm 15 and two weeks ago I got a job at a vet's office, well actually they just fired me yesterday because they didn't think my confidence level on actually doing the job was high enough A.K.A they thought I wasn't good enough, they just said the confidence part on the phone I guess to sound polite, well anyway I had two weeks to train for the job, BUT in the beginning they told me I had a month, so they said I should be ready by the time school starts, but I guess they messed up on telling me that and the job is a lot of work, in 6 days they expected me to be able to check customers in and out, know all of the codes for different medications and know how to put all of the codes and other confusing things into the computer, they never even showed me the codes, I mean they showed me like 2 or 3 times and only a couple of the, not all of them and you would not believe how many there are, know all of the vaccines and know which ones to mix and stay with the doctor and be able to understand all of the things he is talking about and fill out papers and understand his chicken scratch handwriting, even they told me a million times his handwriting is non readable but you have to get used to it and they only showed me how to use the phones for 1 day and they expect me to be perfect at making clients appointments and answering all of the questions that they could have, oh and on top of all of that there is a bunch of cleaning that they also wanted me to do and the first 2 days I was there they did not show me how to do anything, well I mean they showed me a little bit but not that much because I had just started and it was more like showing me around the clinic and not actually showing me how to do anything, all I did was sit in a chair and watch others do stuff and there was another day where they actually showed me stuff but it was not everything, all they showed me was how to pull a vaccine out of its bottle using a siringe and on the day where I got practice with the phones, there were these two girls that I had never met before and they were supposed to show me around and show me all of the stuff that the manager had said but, they didn't, all I did was sit behind the desk and keep answering the phones, so really they only explained stuff to me for two days and even if they did show me a good amount everyday, I don't think that six days is long enough to train someone, especially since this was my first job and they knew that, so it was even more overwhelming, sorry that this is really long but please tell me your opinions

  1. Be happy with your practice you did get on the job and look forward to the next job.  You'll get a little better day by day.

  2. I think the two girls didn't want you there so they never showed you every thing.  Maybe they were hoping a friend would get the position.  Any way, did you explain to the manager that they never showed you the things she said to show you?  A doctors office and a vets office are very high paced positions.  A lot of times they need a person that can watch how things are being done and get right in their with little training.  I know it sucks when they say they are going to train you more than they did.  You can go up there and speak to the manager.  Tell the manager that you loved your job.  Tell the manager that you feel the 2 girls never trained you like they were supposed and if they gave you another chance you promise to get it quickly.

  3. Well, yes, it sounds like an overwhelming job. ANd no, maybe six days aren't enough for training.. but you are 15!! so let it go, and try to find a job which is less overwhelming and where they value and respect you.

yes, probably you are very sad and upset and everything, and you have the right to feel that way, but just remember things happen for a reason and a better job is just around the corner waiting for you.

    good luck

  4. Didn't you post this yesterday, hon?

  5. Welcome to reality!!!! Just move on with your life and stop thinking so far into this. Your so young and you have so many other things to look forward to. Just worry about school right now and having fun while you can!!! Always keep in mind that , when one door closes another door opens!!! Don't stress over things like this. If you really need to work I recommend working as a waitress or a cashier somewhere just for now.
