Question:

Please recommend a car (or possibly an SUV) for me?

I don't know if I want a car or an SUV. Are SUVs wasteful?? If so, how?

- I would like to pay about $25 - 35,000.

- I need to be able to drive in ice and snow.

- I like cars with an elegant look, like Jaguars and Mercedes, but I don't want to spend crazy money.

- I want a safe car, in case of an accident.

- I am not wasteful and want a car with decent gas mileage.

- (I now have a Jeep Grand Cherokee.)

Please advise!! Thank you!!

  1. Stay loyal! oIIIIIIIO or go for a SEBRING/300 awd!

  2. another jeep grand cherokee.  i recently checked out a 2008 grand cherokee laredo 4x4 with the x package, my gig radiow/backup camera, and a tv/dvd system.  that car was amazing it has such a smooth ride i really think i am going back to buy it, i never made it far enough to make a deal(family emergency) but they do have that $2.99 gas deal and they will probably give you a discount on top of that.  the one i looked aat was $38030 but you dont really need the dvd system unless you have kids, which take like $1300 off and then it had some other things added on by the dealership which if taken off would bring the price down to about 36,000 est.  and you can go from there

  3. My pic for a SUV is Dahiatsu D-Compact (designed by Giugiaro, by the way), which is replacing Terios; Dahiatsu vehicles are also known for being highly relaible, they're definitely long lasting, and among the cheaper about gas; whether you need a SUV or not is up to you and where do you live (how's the roads?); just remember a SUV is always by itself a bad choice (compared to "regular" cars) if gas mileage is your priority, though.

  4. Keep the Cherokee.

Take it to a very good or trusted mechanic and have it altered to a hybrid. Biodiesel , Gas/Electric or Hydrogen.

Cost you about as much as a new car and save the waste of the manufacture as well as disposal and recycling costs of the current vehicle.

Many peoples think that recycling is free and good!

    It isn't.

While it is good, it is far from free. It takes fuel to transport those items from one place to another. It takes labor. It causes pollution.

Ok, afore I get all tree hugging, whale saving, anti-consumerist stuff, allow me to explain. The Cherokee, or Jeep was built using x amount of materials,  electric power and people hours.

One cannot change the past, one can find solutions for past mistakes made.

If you would like to pay about $two years income for an eldelry person on SS, well then you want to spend monies.

The rear or axle of that vehicle can easily be outfitted with electric, two or 6 Lithium Ionic batteries over that axle and you have converted.

Could prolly be done for $10k, even it was $20k , it would still be a green savings as well as pretty kool.

Yes SUVs are wasteful by design. All that hight and extra rubber is just a poor blend for economics. In this situation, economics also easily equate to pollution and this vehicles impact or contribution to it.

Lets say you have a mechanic within 100 miles that does this conversion for under $10k, take $4k and have the top cut and lowered a bit.

Sleek and s**y Cherokee, that not only gets good gas mileage but is also economically happy.

Or get a 1956 Mercedes 300 SL, the Gullwing doors one.

    Ooops,,those are $400k,,nevermind.

Chop and channel that Grand Cherokee and make a ride out of it.

  5. Mercury Milan V6 AWD. Buy it to save Mercury (the car company)! Ford will make it die if it doesn't get enough sales by 2012!

  6. some cars and Suv's have FWD or AWD the best vehicle for

snow and ice is a Subaru.

they have been making all wheel drive vehicles for over 20 years.

The Forester has always been a sensible, practical, and affordable vehicle, and the redesigned 2009 model is the same. The base engine is an adequate 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and the turbocharged engine in the XT delivers effortless acceleration.

    Pros:

Have 1600 miles and averaging 27 mpg. Great handling, plenty of room, Huge sunroof, Have taken it off road on some old logging roads and was surprised at how well it handled.  Have added all weather floor mats, back all weather cargo mat and cover.  Bought for my wife for the safety and I drive for the fun.  First time Subaru owner.

    Overall Review:

For fit, finish and overall value I would put this vehicle up against a 40K suv and come out on top. It may not be as pretty with all the gadgets but it gets you where you want to go and based on Subaru's record will so for years and lots of miles.  For those who think its just another suv in name only you should check out the ski areas and back roads in Oregon/Washington.  Theres a reason you see so many.

    2009 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Premium

  7. Trying to find a balance between elegance, safety, fuel economy and AWD is tough F.

    How about a 2008 Ford Edge http://www.edmunds.com/ford/edge/2008/re...

Elegance is a matter of taste but picking a crossover with all around airbags can't be all bad. The brake comment in this review would concern me but might be worth a test drive huh. The AWD version still has mileage better than your Cherokee and a tad better than my Liberty ( I love my Liberty though even though it is decidedly NOT elegant :o)

  8. Volvo XC90

  9. well heres one i have had my eye on of course i would never buy it new but paintence is a virtue and all that

    goodluck

  10. Look at the Subaru Forester and the Pontiac Vibe AWD for good snow handlers that are roomy and also good on gas (much better than your Cherokee).

  11. Well if you say you aren't wasteful then you should not be driving a Grand Cherokee. Those things aren't exactly gas sippers with stunning emissions. Mercedes SUVs are mostly out of your range unless you go back a few years and buy a used ML. Look into Subarus. People snub them for not being luxurious but you can option them up and get the best AWD next to Mercedes 4matic. They're incredibly safe too. Sure, they aren't elegant looking but when that drunk driver comes barreling into your vehicle, do you want a sleek looking car or the ability to keep breathing post-impact?

Grand Cherokees are awful with crashes. A family friend's son had one and the frame literally broke when he flipped it while off-roading in Arizona. The frame isn't supposed to break!
