I'm 15 years old with lots of time on my hands. I've had experience with Parakeets and Cockatiels in the past, and I didn't particularly care for them. I would like a hearty bird that is affectionate and medium-maintainance. I'm planning on adopting, and my budget for all start-up necessities is around $600-$700. I was considering a Sun Conure or Green-Cheeked Conure. I would like something medium-sized. I was planning on getting only one Conure if that's what I chose. I want something that enjoys attention and is playful, but not something too needy that will get depressed without hours of interaction per day. I'd like something that wouldn't be too spooked by the sight of other animals (dogs) and also isn't terribly noisy. Whether or not it can talk isn't a concern.

Also, is it possible to house a Cockatiel and a Conure together?

Thanks for any suggestions!

By the way, I live in a pet-friendly house not terribly close to neighbors.

  1. A great bird for you, would be a Senegal.

They are medium sized, but a good step up from a conure.

They are not as noisy and make really nice pets.Sorry but housing it with a cockatiel would not work, well not at least to start with. You would need to see how they interact together out of their cages.

  2. Hi,

I am so glad you are interested in birds. I own 5 birds (African meyers, 2 tiels, parrotlet, sunconure). I also volunteered at a specialty bird store. If you are looking for a bird that isn't terribly noisy then i would stay away from conures such as sun, jenday, nanday. When it comes to conures the greencheecks are the more quiet of the bunch. I also recommend doing alot of research on types of and care of birds so you are fully prepared. I know you have experience with parakeets and tiels, but each bird species is different and has different needs and pros and cons. All need clean, roomy cages, time with people, fresh foods (scrambled eggs, veggies, fruits, grains), fresh water at least once daily. Maybe you could call an avian vet in your area that would be able to guide you? Also remember that birds need vet care and check-ups just like any other pet so keep that in mind for future costs. You will want to have whatever bird you get checked within a month of getting it. Tiels can't be housed with conures. As a rule they must be the same kind of bird to be housed together and even then that doesn't always work out. Please just make sure your educated and prepared then enjoy the new friend you pick.

  3. Sun conures are LOUD!!!  Green-Cheeked Conures make great pets, even though they aren't as flashy as their relatives.  You could get a Senegal Parrot.  They aren't as loud as sun conures and can entertain themselves.
