    Car - "kar"

    It's different because English is an illogical language.


  2. The very brief answer is that English as a language has a unique mixture of roots, because the British Isles were invaded several times in the first millennium CE, and the languages of the invading tribes or empire eventually melded into 'English'. This also explains the 'illogical' spelling.

    Pronunciations tend to depend on what the root of the word is.
