Please someone explain to me what a positive skew mean?

I am trying to figure out how this relates to my experiment. does my score suggest that my result is not a good representation of population as there is not a lot. if yes but why positive and not negative?

In stats it means that more of the data are towards the lower end; i.e. less than the mean. The data is therefore 'skewed' by a few larger results. Hope this helps xx.

Positive Skew

A curve or distribution of scores that has extreme scores above the mean that are atypical of the majority of scores.

Definition of Atypical

Atypical: Not typical, not usual, not normal but abnormal.

There is also Negative Skew which simply means the exact opposite.

Negative Skew

A curve or distribution of scores that has extreme scores below the mean that are atypical of the majority of scores.

I think your results were caused by Sampling bias which refers to situations where the sample does not reflect the characteristics of the target population.

Sampling bias can occur if the sample contains an over representation of a section of the target population. This might occur from a target population of teachers, when the sample consists of twenty teachers – sixteen males and four females. Females would appear to be underrepresented in the sample. This would mean that your sample was biased and not representative of the target population. Consequently the generalisability of any findings based on this sample would be threatened.
