Alright I'm a little confused on exactly what I need to do and would really appreciate some help. I am suppose to: Describe a social policy that may affect your future position as a human services worker.

o Compare and contrast how a public versus a private organization might address this policy differently. Include an explanation of how the delivery system of a public organization would be different than that of a private organization. For example, what would be some differences between a state-funded child placement agency and a private adoption agency in the way they deliver their

adoption services?

o Consider how you could influence this policy to meet your clients’ needs. If you work for a government organization, you may not be able to lobby, but what other ways could you advocate for your client population?

Can anyone better describe in simplier terms what I am to do from what it is asking for me to do? It's all confusing me and I desperately need help. Thanks

  1. According to a definition I found on the web:

"A Human services worker is a generic term for a professional who works with individuals seeking assistance with a wide variety of social, economicand developmental needs."

According to another website "Social policy relates to guidelines for the changing, maintenance or creation of living conditions that are conducive to human welfare."

Based upon the above you have quite a few social policies to choose from.

For example, in most developed countries we currently don't let people starve to death.

In the U.S. the responsibility for preventing starvation has not always rested wth the Government.  Preventing this originally rested with the family, friends,  churchs and various civic organizations.  However, now Federal and State laws provide for funds to try to provide for food for all that need it.  Laws were written to reflect our policy on this particular issue.

Often these funds are funneled down to cities and various relief organizations through Federal and State grants, but ultimately it is the Federal or State government that provides the funds through money raised by taxing the general public.

Laws can be abolished or changed with time to reflect changes in policy.  If our society felt that providing for the hungry was no longer a Federal responsibility, the laws governing this matter could be abolished.  States and cities could take over this responsibility, but probably would not be in the position to do so effectively, which would leave the responsiblity where it initially rested.

The above is just an example of one policy that may be of importance.   Another example would be whether or not to make the use and possesion of addictive drugs legal.  In the U.S. we have many harsh laws which govern the policy that there use should be restricted.  What would happen if these laws were abolished?

Education is another policy issue.  Education is highly valued but very expensive to provide.  What would happen if State laws requiring an education be provided to children were abolished?
