Question:

Please suggest a song for a mother/son dance for my wedding.?

The only catch is that my mom passed away 3 months ago and she obviously won't be at my wedding. I'm trying to find a song that lyrically fits the situation, but I'm not having any luck. I have plenty of good simple mother/son songs, but I'm just trying to find one that is maybe more appropriate for the situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  1. "Mama" by Il Divo. Here are the lyrics:

Mama, thank you for who I am

Thank you for all the things I'm not

Forgive me for the words unsaid

    For the times I forgot

    Mama remember all my life

You showed me love, you sacrificed

Think of those young and early days

How I've changed along the way [along the way]

    And I know you believed

And I know you had dreams

And I'm sorry it took all this time to see

That I am where I am because of your truth

And I miss you, yeah I miss you

Mama forgive the times you cried

Forgive me for not making right

All of the storms I may have caused

And I've been wrong, Dry your eyes [dry your eyes]

    Cause I know you believed

And I know you had dreams

And I'm sorry it took all this time to see

That I am where I am because of your truth

And I miss you, I miss you

Mama I hope this makes you smile

I hope you're happy with my life

At peace with every choice I made

How I've changed along the way [along the way]

Cause I know you believed in all of my dreams

And I owe it all to you, Mama

Il Divo really do the song justice.

  4. "It's Your Song"

    -Garth Brooks

    Standing in the spotlight

    On such a perfect night

Knowing that your out there listening

    I remember one time

    When I was so afraid

Didn't think I had the courage

To stand up on this stage

Then you reached into my heart

    And you found the melody

And if there ever was somebody

Who made me believe in me

    It was you

    It was you

It was your song that made me sing

It was your voice that gave me wings

And it was your light that shined

    Guiding my heart to find

    This place where I belong

    It was your song

    Every night I pray

Before the music starts to play

That I'll do my best and I won't let you down

And for all the times I've stood here

    This feeling feels brand new

And any time I doubt myself I think of you

'Cause It was your song that made me sing

It was your voice that gave me wings

And it was your light that shined

    Guiding my heart to find

    This place where I belong

    It was your song

    Dreams can come true

With God's great angels like you

It was your song that made me sing

It was your voice that gave me wings

And it was your light that shined

    Guiding my heart to find

    This place where I belong

    It was your song

    It was your song

    It's always been your song

  5. I'm Missing You by Meja

I miss your love, since you've been gone

I find it hard to go on

The summer sky don't mean a thing

I thought I'd always be strong

    I got a feeling inside

and it's making my heart cry, cause

    I'm missing you

and it's making me blue, yeah

    I'm missing you

    but what can I do

    Thousand miles away, from you

So here I am, and everything's new

I should be happy in love

but all I know, I look deep in my eyes

    I've never felt so alone

    and this feeling inside

it's making my heart cry, cause

    I'm missing you

and it's making me blue, yeah

    I'm missing you

    but what can I do

    Thousand miles away, from you

So what's the meaning of this

    to be living like this

it ain't no fun at all

I wonder where are you now

(I wonder where are you now)

I miss your love since you been gone

I find it hard to go on

    and this feeling inside

I just break down and cry

  8. Faith Hill's "There you'll be"

    When I think back

    On these times

    And the dreams

    We left behind

    I'll be glad 'cause

    I was blessed to get

To have you in my life

    When I look back

    On these days

I'll look and see your face

    You are there for me

    [CHORUS:]

    In my dreams

    I'll always see you soar

    Above the sky

    In my heart

    There always be a place

For you for all my life

    I'll keep a part

    Of you with me

    And everywhere I am

    There you'll be

    Well you showed me

    How it feels

    To feel the sky

    Within my reach

    And I always

    Will remember all

    The strength you

    Gave to me

    Your love made me

    Make it through

Oh, I owe so much to you

You were right there for me

    [Repeat chorus]

'Cause I always saw in you

    My light, my strength

And I want to thank you

    Now for all the ways

You were right there for me

You were right there for me

    For always

  9. My condolences for your loss.

So, you'll be doing a dance by yourself?  Or will you have a fill-in?

"Simple Man" is a good song.  It's a guy singing, saying what his mother wanted for him.  It's a great mother/son song anyway, but I think it would fit your situation well:

Mama told me when I was young

Come sit beside me, my only son

And listen closely to what I say.

    And if you do this

It will help you some sunny day.

Take your time... dont live too fast,

Troubles will come and they will pass.

Go find a woman and youll find love,

    And dont forget son,

    There is someone up above.

    (chorus)

And be a simple kind of man.

Be something you love and understand.

Be a simple kind of man.

Wont you do this for me son,

    If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich mans gold

All that you need is in your soul,

And you can do this if you try.

All that I want for you my son,

    Is to be satisfied.

    (chorus)

Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself.

Follow you heart and nothing else.

And you can do this if you try.

All I want for you my son,

    Is to be satisfied.

    (chorus)

...alternately, if you're dancing with somebody else, you could do Rascal Flatt's "My Wish"  That's a good song, all about "my wish for you..." and it doesn't specify a relationship.
