Please suggest the Best Digital Camcorder to take digital stills.?

Question

I want to purchase a camcorder. Most important is great video, good in low light, optical image stabilazation and small size. I would like it to take very good digital stills (this is very important). Ease of transfering video and still pictures to pc and dvds is important also. A larger optical zoom of 15x or more would be a plus. I want to stay under $1000. I will use mainly automatic mode (bells & whistles not important). Heading for an Alaska vacation & I may not have computer access to download hard drive cameras so I believe a dvd (my choice I think) or mini dv format best. Your thoughts? What brand and model would you choice and why? I want a new camera but does not have to be one of the current year models. I do not have a HD TV or equipment. Will HD camcorders work on a reqular TV & dvd.? Thank
