  1. The best way to familiarize yourself with the somewhat complicated and confusing world of college financing is a free booklet that is published by the US Department of Education.

It's called "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid", and it will explain everything you need to know to start thinking about grants, loans, scholarships, work study and every possible form of financial assistance for college.

I've attached a link to an online version of this document. You can also request a hard copy from your high school or from any college financial aid department. I highly recommend it to you and to your parents, because there's also information in there about the kinds of financial aid your parents can qualify for if they choose to help you out.

In brief - keep this in mind. The federal government is your best friend when it comes to educational assistance. The way the government looks at it is this - the more people who receive a college education, the more money we'll earn, the better the economy will be, and the more successful and productive the US workforce will be. Because they know that a college education is very expensive, they're in the "business" of helping out everyone who wants to go to college.

Unless you're a very lucky student, the government will not be able to provide you with sufficient assistance to pay for all of your college expenses. That's where your savings and your parents come in. If you're still not able to cover all the costs, there are other forms of assistance, offered by organizations other than the federal government. Most of those organizations are private lenders - and they're in the business of "helping" students afford college for one reason only - to make a buck. You use these options only if you HAVE to. Your first option should always be to see what the federal government can do for you.

As you'll see when you read this booklet, all federal assistance starts with an application called the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance, better known as the FAFSA. You'll complete the FAFSA and submit it to the Department of Education.

The FAFSA is used to determine how much you and your family can be expected to pay towards your college education. Always remember that you and your family are the people with the primary responsibility to pay for YOUR education.

Any money from the US government is coming to you courtesy of the taxpayers, and frankly, we don't know you all too well, and we're not that anxious to help you go to school if you and your parents aren't willing to pick up your fair share of the tab.. If you don't have much, we'll help you out, but if you can afford college all by yourself, well, we're going to expect you to pay for it, and not look to us for a handout.

Start out by reading this booklet, and I would be willing to bet that you'll know a lot more about financing a college education by the time you're done.

I hope this helps - good luck to you!
