Please tell me about blogs

Question

the way i understand it blogs are a public diary on the web where someone can express there opinions on varied subject matter and possibily get feedback. given those preamitors i would be interested in starting blog(s) but am unsure of how they work.

i've never even been to a blog or seen one except those on company or site links such as comic book ones.

my questions are:

can an individual get their own blog? for free?

if so, how does one make it avaviable to the public on the web?

how does one get feedback from others?

for example if i wanted to make a blog on abortion and express my opinions on the matter and then get feedback on those opinions from the web how would i do it?

also if i wanted to set up a blog just to display my artwork and possibaly advertise for freelance work could i do that?

Yes, it's free.  I got my boyfriend to help me set one up on wordspress.com.  Check it out.  It gives you instructions on how to upload pics and choose a layout, etc.

anyone can set up a blog.

I have 2 in fact, using Blogger.

there automatically public to the web, you can set it to be private though, if youwant it ot have more publicity thaen advertise it about.

feedback - most blogs include a comments box at the bottom, some allow anon. users, some registered users, once agian you cna set this

you can make a blog on any subject you wnat, and is a great way to show your own opinions  on the subject, though if you shoose contraversial issues, or politcally oriented subjects, expect some bad feedback.

you cna put up pictures and video on your blog, though it is normally embeded ( so taken from another site like youtube etc)

if you use Blogger it can use an OpenID to log in, quite handily Yahoo is OpenID so you can use your Y!Answers login name nad password to  log into blogger, its pretty easy to do.
