  1. 1.  You/your child is expected to learn the same material, and in the exact same manner, as every other child, and expected to do so at the same pace.  It does not matter if the method is not the one that works best for him/her.  If the child is average, s/he might do fine but if s/he needs more time, she will fall behind and if s/he masters it quickly, boredom will occur.

    2.  You/your child is grouped together with 29 (+/-) other children from their community, born the same year they were.  For 13 or so years, they are taught that this is the way to socialize and that this prepares them for the "real world".  However, nowhere else in the real world are you isolated by such standards.

    3.  You/your child has to wake early.  Numerous studies have shown that a later start, especially for older students, produces better results.

    4.  You/your child has to spend 7 (+/-) hours at school, doing work that should only take approximately half that long if it were not for having to do mundane tasks such as roll call, correcting bad behavior, and the like.

    5.  Because you/your child is in school for all of those hours, s/he is missing out on being able to socialize in the real world and get real world experiences.  A homeschooled child learns to socialize with people of all ages, and to do so naturally-not in a forced environment that school creates.

    6.  Also, because you/your child is in school for all of those hours, there is less time for outside activities, as even the evenings and weekends are often filled with homework.

    7.  The previously mentioned homework.  When you/your children spend all of those hours at school, but are sent home with more work to complete.  Studying for a test or practicing reading is acceptable, as is special projects, but homework just for the sake of it is ridiculous.  When are the children supposed to have time to play ball, etc?

    8.  When a child attends school, I do not know how they ever manage to get quality family time-in the morning, there is the rush to get everyone up, fed, dressed and out the door.  In the evenings, there is the rush of getting that homework done, supper, baths and getting in bed on time.

    9.  When you/your child goes to school, you learn about things from a book.  If you are lucky, you might get to go on one or two field trips a year.  When you are homeschooled, you have the ability to go on as many field trips you wish and learn first hand, instead of just through a book.

    10.  When you/your child goes to school, your vacations are dictated by school holidays.  Some places it is just nicer to visit at other times of the year than summer, and the off season is also less expensive.  Not to mention there is less of a crowd!

    11.  While it is important to learn to read, write and do math and also some other basics, and certainly we homeschoolers are always compeling our children to learn new stuff, school forces some things that are just unnecessary.  Foreign language, for instance-it is a waste of time and tax dollars.  The majority of high school graduates that tookt he required two years of a foreign language in high school retain any of it several years later.  It would be more beneficial if it was introduced in elementary school.

    12.  More important lessons are HOW to learn (i.e. use the internet, encyclopedias, dictionary) something they want and/or need.

    13.  Schools are often used as more of a nanny than anything else, at the taxpayers expense.  Some excel, which is great.  The majority are average, which is okay if you want your child to be average.  Some fail, which is a disgrace to the students they serve.

    14.  What your children are taught is determined by a panel of people other than yourself, and you as a parent have little or no say when your child attends school.  This applies to not only religious instruction, but s*x ed (you should have a say in whether your child is taught abstinence only instruction or otherwise), and the government tends to leave some things out and/or misrepresent it.

    15.  Some schools are going beyond just instituting a dress code (which I see the reason for), but also determining how the students can wear their hair.  In some cases, children have been told they can not wear a rosary necklace or a chain with a cross on it.

    16.  Parents with children that have allergies or other health issues have to worry about their children at school.  Meanwhile, some schools go overboard and tell students that they not only can not bring strawberries and/or peanut butter with their lunches, but can not have them for breakfast either (this HAS happened) because of the risk of one student who has an allergy.  I must say I understand the plight of that student and his/her parents, but to dictate what an entire school of other students can do not only at school but at home is not right.

    17.  http://www.101reasons.org  This site has 101 news headlines dating back to July 2007-less than one year.  The majority of them have to do with teachers having sexual relationships with their students.

    18.  Instead of learning from others modeling proper behavior, your child is learning to behave with 29 or so other children who also have no idea!

    19.  Your children will pick up all negative language, behavior and the like that the other children know.  They will be exposed to bullies (where else in the "real world" do you have to put up with such).

I could name quite a few more...

  2. you may get bullied by pupils and teachers

  3. there are none... and the english teacher will help you learn how to properly spell the word "school"

  4. Bullying, necessity of wearing bullet-proof vests all day, abuse by teachers, substandard education, lack of values and morals being taught, being taught evolution is a scientific fact rather than an unproven theory, lack of discipline, lack of accountability, lack of ethnic diversity or too much ethnic diversity, lack of nutritious cafeteria food, disgusting cafeteria food, constant testing, drug dealers, labels of ADHD and other disorders, school officials forcing medication on families, lack of supervision.

If I missed any, let me know :)

  5. I am a homeschool mom who majored in Secondary Education, but instead of teaching in a public institution, I chose to homeschool. I think that the general public is very uninformed about homeschooling today, and still relies on the old stereotype of the "shy unsocialized hermetic homeschooler" who never leaves their home and has no friends. It is so inaccurate. My kids are very social and anything but shy! We live in a suburb of Kansas City, and there are hundreds, maybe thousands of other Hschoolers in our small area. Nationwide, there are millions of us. We are active members of several local groups for homeschool famlies, and we take part in at least one social activity every day, outside of our home. Activities are set up and organized by moms through yahoo email loops. Our local homeschool groups offers the following activities to name a small few; Girl and Boy Scout troops, 4H, campfire, bowling, gymnastics, swimming, horseback riding, art, choir, and gym classes, holiday parties, book clubs, a 2 hour long recess time every week, plus park days, field trips, picnics and academic fairs. These are just a few of the many things we do while everyone else is in school). When we are not doing our lessons, we are always on the go, and it is ironic that we call ourselves homeschoolers since we spend so much time away from home! Homeschoolers have the advantage of one on one personalized attention educationally, and we also dont have to waste a lot of time on discipline, paperwork, and busywork. We can get our lessons done in a couple hours each morning, and then get on with enjoying our hobbies and friends. We also have the advantage of making closer more meaningful friendships because our kids have the time for more playdates and outings, instead of sitting, bored and institutionalized behind a desk all day. I find it ridiculous that public schools are thought of as a great place to socialize! How can kids socialize when they have to sit silently and listen for 8 hours a day?? Homeschoolers have the time to learn at their own pace, to spend time with friends, and just be kids, without the pressures and negative influences of public school. Homeschool kids are not hermits and they are not freaky nerds. They are just really lucky kids who get to enjoy life and learning every day. No child is left behind in a homeschool, and socialization is the best reason to homeschool. Public school creates a harsh artificial society where children are raised by their peers. Homeschoolers live and learn in the real world. For more info, read the book; "The Well adjusted Child; The Social Benefits of Homeschooling", by Rachel Gathercole,

or Dumbing Us Down; The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling, by John Taylor Gatto

  6. Negative peer pressure, popularity contests,  promiscuity is admired - virtue is ignored or ridiculed, smart kids who try to do their best are labeled as geeks, nerds etc. An inability for kids to spend extra time on the subjects that interest them most because of being forced to study many irrelevant things. Teachers who say they spend so much time trying to restore order and discipline that they don't have time to teach. Mainstreaming where kids who need extra help are integrated into a classroom and cannot possibly do the work. Coming home from school and doing 3 hours of homework when the whole school day could be covered in 3 hours of directed learning. Critical thinking isn't taught, instead it's compilation of facts. Dumbing down where mediocrity is accepted and excellence is considered unacheivable.Lack of socialization among siblings. An inability to continue deepening a relationship with the people who love you most, your parents.

  7. None.  Happy trails.

  8. kids attacking others, teachers sleeping with students, fighting, teasing, bullys, smart mouth teachers, uniforms, pushing them to learn too fast

  9. How about instead of focusing on the negative aspects of school, you focus on the positive aspects of Home Schooling?

    *Working at your own pace.

*Getting to experience the "real world" every    day, not the Sub culture of public school which is NOTHING like the real world.

*Not picked on by other students because of a  difference which may be a good thing.

*Able to communicate and make eye contact with all different ages because that's who you hang out with.

    *Ability to graduate early.

*More time with for socialization with friends and for community service

    *Better relationship with parents.

That being said, my oldest daughter wanted to try a few public school classes this year and I allowed her to do so. She does not want to go back next year despite being well liked and doing great in her classes. I am making her finish it up this year though, she wanted to drop out. She says there is WAY to much drama over dumb stuff and they waste a lot of time.

  10. A disadvantage? Well, I have never had the experience of being home schooled and have been privileged enough to attend a private school in my home town of London. I love it at a school and i couldn't ever be home-schooled. I'm sure that it is great for learning at your own pace, however surely the social side would suffer greatly. Maybe a social life is not the most important thing to everyone, but I think that it is a very big factor in making you the person you are today. You have people to talk to and rely on, instead of only having your parents, and I think that going to a school makes you actually more likely to work because you have teachers who you must respect and rules which you must follow. if you have an argument with the parent who is teaching you, who's to say that you wouldn't be in a really bad mood and not want to listen to anything that they say? I know that if ever i have disputes with a parent, I'm so glad to be off to school to see my friends and get out of the house.

Also, at a school you have a much broader education. When home-schooled, the chances are that you are taught by only one tutor, at a school, you are taught by many different teachers who have all taken many degrees and courses in their subject and really know what they're talking about! I believe that it is better to have many different inputs in education to a single one.

There is also the issue of sport, for example. At a school, there are many many opportunities to join clubs or teams. When home-schooled, it is only you! It's not just sports clubs though, any extra curricular clubs, such as choir, orchestra or arts and drama.

Going to school teaches you about the way to behave around other people your age and also to teachers who must be respected. It gives a sense of order and one knows how to treat those of the same age, and those superior and older than us.

Finally, It is an opportunity to meet interesting people. The chances are that there will be many types of people at school, and obviously, one will not get on well with every single person, but things can be learnt from every single person and help in the future. After all, even if you are a straight A student, if you have nobody to share it with, what's the point? I would say that a really rich and clever doctor without buddies would be much sadder than a street cleaner with lots of friends. What's the point in saving up the knowledge and money when you could be out talking to people and making the most of your life?

I know i may be biased towards school because i have always attended one, however a friend of my brothers dropped out of school at 11 for a year and hated the exclusion so much that he came back 6 months later.

I hope this gives you an insight in to school life! Not everyone will share my views, but this is just my opinion and if you don't agree then its totally fine! Just wanted to give you some juxtaposing thoughts to contemplate =]

  11. i dont think there is any?

  12. Did you mean public school??  If so, I would say the major disadvantage is negative socialization.
