  1. Nouns - person, place, or thing (as indicated above).  Technically, "you," "me," and "them" are pronouns, but pronouns work the same way nouns work in a sentence.

Nouns are used as the SUBJECT of a sentence.  In this case, the noun indicates who or what did the action of the sentence.  E.g., "Leroy ran down the street."  "Leroy" is a noun and the subject of the sentence.

Nouns are also used as OBJECTS.  They can be direct objects.  "Brittany dropped the pan."  "Pan" is the thing that the action happened to.  They can be indirect objects.  "I gave Frank the money."  "Frank" is the indirect object; "money" is the direct object.  And nouns can be the object of the preposition.  "Leroy ran down the street."  "Street" is the obj of the prep.

Nouns can be common nouns or proper nouns.  A proper noun refers to a particular, named person place or thing: "Leroy," "Chicago," "Astrodome."  A common noun refers to a generic person, place, or thing: "boy," "city," "stadium."
