  1. Roses should be pruned with an ANVIL type of secateur and the best time is when the growth is dormant in mid-winter, yes you freeze your b... off, but never mind.

Prune back to the previous years growth even if you go almost to the base, it won't harm them. They will grow in Spring and flower Spring to Autumn (Fall for you US guys)

  2. use gardning snips lol

  3. most books tell you to go below the second 5 leaf cluster on the stem and cut at a 45 degree angle towards the outer side of the plant but recently I read that it's not really necessary so this time I didn't do that and have more roses then ever. I just nip them off the top. Good luck

  4. To cut them as we have for hundreds of years use good secateurs, trim hybrid T's down to about foot or 18'' according to  its size. Florinda's need pruning lighter to about 2'-2.1/2'. I prune in early winter, just cut the tops off to stop 'wind rock' then in spring, early April, carry out the final pruning. Cut down to the heights given above about 1/4' above an outer facing bud. Yes at an angle, allows the rain to run off and not cause stem rot. there are some people these days say that they do theirs with a chain saw, but I've been doing them the old trad way for years and never had a bad season.
