Let's just go through the first two and then you can recheck the rest.

2. 5y-x if x is 8 & y is -11

   5 x 8 = 40 and then you subtract a negative which is the same as adding a positive so you add the 11 to 40 for an answer of 51.

4.  5 x -14 = -70  and 3 x 13 = 39 Subtracting 39 from a negative 70 gives you -109

Go back and really pay attention to whether the numbers are positive or negative and the rules for adding and subtracting them.

Let's also do problem number 8 to try to help you with the + or - notation:

If x is a NEGATIVE 8 and you are to solve for -x, then the result has to be just 8.

It might help to use a number line to help keep track of which direction from 0 you are working.

2. why are there two y's?

im assuming the latter is x...

5(8) - (- 11) = 40 + 11 = 51 since sames signs are always positive...

4. 5(-14) - 3(13) = -70 - 39 = -109 you should watch out for the signs...

6. 8(5) + 4(17) - 2(-8) =  40 + 68 + 16 = 124

8. - x is 8... just transfer the sign... x is not equal to -x...

10. - m is -12... same reason with 8

12. -(-6 + 20) = -14 (CORRECT!)

14. -(1 + 2) = -3... do the ones inside the parenthesis first...

16. |21| + |-12| = 21 + 12 = 33 the absolute value of any number is positive...

18. |21 + (- 9)| = 12 do the ones inside the absolute value first...

20. |31 - (-6)| = |31 + 6| = 37 same signs are positive...
