When I play chess I like to be creative with my moves and I vary it often. I don't follow Chess theorys nor Chess openings that are already done by famous players.

I want to know what will be the problem if you disobey opening moves, what could happen? I really think that chess is just using your creativity and concentration to become good.

Thank you for anwering.

  1. People have been playing chess for centuries.  They've found that some moves work better than others.  That's where the established openings come from.

Here's a simple example.  Suppose you're playing Black and the game goes 1. e4 e5  2. Nf3 so you have to decide how to answer the attack on your e-pawn.  The most common answers are defense with 2. ...Nc6 or counterattack with 2. ...Nf6, but you decide to get creative and play 2. ...f6.  There follows 3. Nxe5 fe  4. Qh5+ and you're in trouble.  White's next move, 5. Qxe5+, will either checkmate you or win your Rook (depending on your fourth move).

This is why good players don't play 2. ...f6.  It's just a bad move.

The principle is the same for less dramatic examples.  Over the years, people have discovered that White wins more often with opening moves like 1. e4 and 1. d4 than with 1. a4 or 1. h4.  More generally, they've discoverd that it works better to contest the center and to develop your pieces quickly.  No amount of creativity on your part will change that.

There is some room for creativity.  A hundred years ago, Black almost never played 1. d4 Nf6.  Early in the twentieth century, Nimzovich and others began playing it more often and coming up with different ways for Black to continue.  Today, these openings, called Indian systems, are more common than the older standby, 1. d4 d5.

This is how chess openings are developed.  People think of new moves or new ways to make old moves work.  You can't completely disregard what's already been investigated, though.  Black has 20 different possible responses to 1. d4 and most of them stink.
