Please tell me your TRUTHFUL, first hand experience about YOUR neutered dog?

Did your dog become less hyper and lazy?

My dog likes chasing after his toys right now. Running towards me when I come home. Wagging his tail like crazy when I hold his food bowl. And similar stuffs like that. These are what I consider "hyper", and I like it. Will all these change?

I need first hand experience only. I've read millions of websites that said it will NOT. So I "know" it will not, but I would appreciate your very own experience.

Thank you!

  1. My dog chases squirrels and will try to jump the 6ft fence in the backyard. He loves running circles in the yard with a rope toy in his mouth. He bounces around like a kangaroo when I get home from being gone (even for 5 minutes). He's a hyper maniac...and I love him!

Having a dog neutered doesn't change their personality or character traits. Period!

  2. Neutering doesn't make dogs lazy, but lazy owners who don't properly provide attention and mental stimulation for the dog = a lazy dog.

  3. Paco didn't seem to notice when he was neutered at 7 months. He was sore for two days, and then back to his clownish self.

Did it slow him down? No way!

You know police K9s,  Guide dogs for blind, and most search and rescue dogs are neutered..so it doesn't affect them negatively.

  4. I was VERY skeptical about getting my dog neutered. I had boy dogs before and didn't have them neutered and I've had girl dogs before but did have them spayed.  I really did my research on this because the last dog I had was a girl and she was spayed and I did notice a difference in her after the surgery.  I think it was too much anesthesia and not the actual procedure but I couldn't prove it.

So anyway, I did end up getting my boy neutered at 7 mos old back in March.  I researched vets that would only do it with Sevo gas and no injectible anesthesia and she also used a laser.  I was very very happy with the result.  He was done at 10 am and he was home acting a fool as usual at 2 pm.  He was only teed off that he couldn't eat supper til 8 pm that nite.  He's been great ever since.  No personality difference and no energy difference but you have to make sure you tell your vet exactly what you want.  You want your dog to have pre op blood work, Sevo gas only and no injectable anesthesia and you want it done with a laser, not a scalpel.  You'll have to keep him calm for the first 10 days and don't get his stitches wet or chew down there, and no jumping or running.

  5. hahahahahahahah I WISH!

nope, my males are STILL crazy, active, athletic, they STILL have the same high energy, the same toy/ball drive, and one is STILL dog aggressive....

  6. if that were the case with it making a dog less hyper i am glad i got mine fixed before i brought him home. he gets so hyper chaseing his tail now he lays on his back and goes from side to side to try and get it runs like a maniac thru the apartment usually tipping over the couch in the process and just loves to run and play with other dogs cats kids pillows blankets everything...and animals that are fixed are usually healthier then ones that aren't

  7. None of mine has gotten lazy nor did they get fat.  In fact, my neutered chow mix had a hard time keeping weight on.  He was very active until he was about 15, then slowed down gradually.  He passed away last month at 17.  My other two neutered dogs here are active, and a little chunky because they are piggies, not because they are neutered.  Both are still playful and active ten year olds.

  8. After Pilot was neutered, and a time later,.....he became more "devoted" to us, or should I say....he seemed to want to be closer to us.  He began to follow us around the house upstairs and downstairs, more.  I think he bacame more effectionate, as goldens are known for their sweet, loving manner, anyway.  He became more that way instead of being on the prowl for....should I say, "females"?   After about 8 months, it didn't phase him in the least.  However, he still humps his fluffy pillow bed everytime he is finished dinner.....upstairs, around the hall, into our room, and we can hear shakin goin on for a few seconds, then he returns downstairs!!  Go figure!

No, he is not lazy at all.....he is not hyper either as we get him outdoors often and he gets exercise every day.  He's not bored.

  9. When I got my doggie neutered, he came home a little sluggish from the drugs used to put him out for the surgery.  Since then, he's back to his old self, though he's slowing down a little from old age.  The same will happen with your dog, I'm sure.  After all, if you didn't know your testes were removed, you'd still be the same you, right?  Good luck!

  10. All I have to say is DO NOT CUT THAT DOGS BALLS OFF. It will change him. Think about it. You take away a male life form's pride and joy and expect him to be ok? Would you cut off your brother's balls? Your Dad's?

Ok, maybe you would but I really hope you don't. My brother's dog has never been the same since he got neutered.

  11. I had a bullmastiff in which I had neutered when he was 5 due to breeder recommendations. He was the same before and after. His personality and zest for life never changed. He recently passed away at 8 due to old age but he had no issues.

  12. My dog was snipped at 5 months old.  A few days after healing, he was back to himself as if nothing happened.

He's still a crazy dog who jumps for food, torments cats, chases the laser pointer until he's dizzy, and is up for a game of fetch any time I throw a toy!

When they say a dog is "calmer" after a neuter.. what they really mean is.. he's more focused.  He will be more concerned about YOU, because he's less concerned with seeking a mate, marking territory, and fighting rival males.

  13. My dog did not change in any of those aspects :)

he just became harder to agitate

  14. I have had two Dobermanns neutered in the past. Their characters remained exactly the same as they were before being castrated, good points and bad.

  15. I have 3 dogs 2 neutered males each 2 yrs. old and one spayed female almost a yr old,(they are all different breeds) and they are the most playful hyper dogs you could imagine. They still love to play and it adds peace of mind knowing they can play outside and not have to worry about them having puppies.

  16. I have a 5.5 year old male Papillon who has been neutered since 5 months of age.  He's more high-strung and neurotically energetic than most border collies.  So my personal, truthful answer would be- you can only PRAY they calm down after neutering, but it probably won't happen!

Most people *think* it happens because they neuter between 6-12 months- and shortly afterward, the dog naturally calms down as it ages from a puppy to an adult, so the owner attributes it to the neutering rather than natural maturity.

  17. Trust me that won't change if any thing it will get better because he won't care as much about unfixed dogs and will be much more happy about people.

  18. Neither one of my boys changed at all after being neutered.

If you're worried about his energy-both of them are working gundogs, so I do need them to retain their 'crazy' drive for working-they LOVE fetch, no matter what it is. Jake was my first, and I was nervous about him losing some energy/drive when I got him neutered, but it didn't change a thing.

The only things it should change is his desire to roam (wanting to find a female in heat), desire to be dominant, and desire to mark (not eliminate, but it will decrease it).

Kudos to you for wanting to get your dog neutered! Not as many people do this as they should, so I give a major pat on the back to everyone who does =]

  19. Hello!

My dog didn't calm down a bit. Actually, after the neutering the vet told me to limit his activity for the next week. It was very hard!!! My guy is so full of energy! Getting your dog neutered is a good choice, and he will recover very quickly!

  20. Of 3 males neutered, none were any different. I think the mellowing out is coincidental with outgrowing puppyhood. I had them all done at 6 months.

  21. I've never noticed a big difference, other than after neutering they are less likely to mark and it seems it is easier for them to focus for training and so on. Actually, same for the females. We spay and neuter everybody!

  22. I have had spayed and neutered dogs, and I can honestly tell you that if your dog plays with his toys now and is happy to see you when you get home, loves to eat his dinner, then he will still continue to do those things.

  23. I was afraid of if he would change or not too.  No, he was exactly the same as before.  Just for a while afterwards, we had to keep him from jumping much or going up and down stairs.  But as far as his playfulness, energy, etc., I saw no change in personality at all.

He's still a very energetic, playful little guy, he just can't have babies anymore, only difference.

  24. my dog is 3 now and he is exactly the same before he was neutered (at a couple months old) but please know that all dogs regardless of breed will slow down the older they get....but most dogs in good health can remain active until they are old in age (im talking 9 or ten years old or older) so i think that these behaviors that you like will most likely stay but your dogs social behavior will change (the way he meets the other dogs) because neutering takes away the male horomones and can lessen the chance of fighting and it makes the male unable to father puppies, so you wont have to worry about that, neutering and spaying your dogs are a good thing...so kudos to you...

  25. No, we had our 2 Rotti's neutered at 6 mos old, both of them in about 5-6 days was back as they were, has not slowed them down not one ounce.

and have had 3 Min. Schnauzers neutered, did not affect any of them either, was time to retire them.....just as bouncy as ever.

it seems the owners that do not walk, play or enjoy their pets much, the dogs will become lazy and just lay around a lot and gains weight.

if kept active, your dog will do fine,.....

  26. How about my spayed dog? :) Yes, she was lazy for a few days, but that's all. Just long enough for the anesthesia to wear off, and her wound to heal.

Thank you for choosing to neuter and be responsible, and don't listen to idiots like Jo Jo who say "your dad wouldn't like it" No, people are NOT dogs, and dogs are NOT people. Besides that, many men have had vasectomies and have not noticed any difference in s*x drive, function, etc. Dog's don't even care!

  27. Its a good idea to get your dog neutered. It will lessen the chance of them trying to get out to get to a  female on heat in the neighbourhood. Also lessens aggression. I got my Kelpie neutered a month ago at 6 months and after sleeping heaps after surgery due to anaesthesia. The next morning he was back to his hyperactive self and trying to keep him calm was impossible. Lucky no popped stitches. Now I am still exhausted trying to exercise him enough. Okay okay I have a kelpie pup but still I think the personality will not change.

He will be great don't stress, I had a few concerns, but now I know I was stressing needlessly
