  1. I'm not a woman.  My experience was that I was rarely stationed with them.  When I was, it was a completely different world.  I tried to treat them the same as I would my men.  But that was quickly squashed.  I had to attend "Sensitivity Training" classes and was quickly introduced to the double standard.  I tried to treat them as equals.  I had friends who absolutely resented their presence.  They take up shore billets making it hard to rotate to desired duty stations when coming off sea tours.  They get awarded various medals like the Navy Com for simply having done their job no more, no less.  And shore tours always inflated their evals because they weren't eligible for ribbons and medals awarded while serving in operational units. Those inflated evals play directly into promotions so guess who gets promoted faster...  At MCRD in San Diego, it was like dealing with high school girls.  Lots of cat fighting and drama.  Very little professionalism and esprit de corps.  And I thought (mistakenly) that working with young boys was difficult...

Dear Navy Sailor Gal, Come Monday morning after formation, ask your Div. O. what he/she thinks the worse could happen if you were to inadvertantly insult some old Navy retired guy who used to work with the Surgeon General of the Navy, was good friends with the CNO, the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Naval Personnel.  Yours was precisely to what I was referring when I quipped about a complete lack of professionalism.  You are a Sailor 24/7 and as such are accountable 24/7.  So, here's a couple of short lessons for you.  Gross disrespect and insubordination applies, even to retirees.  You just never know to whom you are speaking, nor do you know how you will be perceived when writing memo's or on the internet.  And lastly, even if the old guy was being a chauvanist pig, you have the right to think what you like, but chances are, you should never say aloud nor act on those thoughts.

  2. Awesome as long as you don't use your body and s*x to get ahead or get out of work.  If you are honest and work hard  you can do better than most men.  I personally hated working with most females because they would either get pregnant on purpose to get off the ship or they would ho around to avoid doing real work.  Those types of females are no better than $4 hookers in the civilian world.  I was Sailor of the Year two years in a row and rose quickly in paygrade because I took my job seriously but still had tons of fun.  I am not saying you have to be a nun or anything just have some good morales and common sense as well as great work ethic and the drive to try new things.  The Navy is still the best choice I have ever made.  The Army is horrible for woman and they still treat the females like dogs either to their face or behind their backs.  The Navy is probably the most forward thinking these days about woman in the military.  Go for it and do your research.  You asked about recruitment so I am hoping you didn't find a dirt bag recruiter.  If so ask for a new one.  STUDY hard for the ASVAB before taking the test and get as many job choices as you can.  Good luck and after today, don't worry about being female in the Navy, you are far from being alone we are everywhere in every job and every paygrade.
