  1. Forgive me for making assumptions, because you may be very capable...but since you are riding a GMC bike I will assume you haven't done a lot of riding, and likely don't do much of your own mechanical work.

I would plan a few short 50-100 mile rides before I tackle anything serious.  Even then you will have to carefully plan so you are never too far from mechanical help.

if you are self sufficent, resourceful, pack yourself well, and can work on your own bike, and carry spares of all your critical parts (tires, tubes, tools, inflators, etc) then you can go on a longer journey.

Again, forgive the assumptions if they are inaccurate, but the bike you mention is a far cry from a touring bike that was intended for long distance touring...like you would find in most bike shops.

  2. Considering your bike, I would strongly suggest you "build up" to any touring. Your bike, regrettably, just isn't made to handle the miles and the stresses of extended riding.

Although the GMC might be OK for learning about road bikes it is not good for any type of extended rides. To this end, start with rides of 20 miles, then increase 10 miles per week. You'll eventually discover the limitations of your bike- and yourself.

  3. Depends. What state are you in? Are you used to distance riding with a load? Self-supported or "credit card" touring? How many days? Do you do your own wrenching?
