For a school project, i'm suppose to collect a sample of a pond. Then just by that small sample, i'm suppose to roughly determine the biodiversity of that pond. The only things i can use are the things in the science classroom, which pretty much is only the microscope. How am i suppose to do this just by doing something to that sample? And what am I suppose to be doing? The only thing i have is that bottle/cup of sample....

  1. The things that you can check for are pH, turbidity, nitrogen levels, and phosphate.

Get a sample and observe what the water looks like.

If it is cludy, it has a high turbidity and the pond itself probably has a lot of nutrients.  The nigtrogen lvels and the phosphate would require titration though.

You can also look at the pond water under a microscope and see if there are any microogranisms such as ameobas and parameciums. Good luck!

  2. suck a little up in a syringe, put it on th lens and check it out...

  3. biological diversity..........so you are to determine how many live specimen,s contribute to the environment of the pond....large or small.......use your eye,s & the microscope.

  4. Dear you can take a drop of water from your sample/samples and check under microscope for species you find note them repeat the experiment for more then 10-20 times or more it depends upon your sample size.

you will be able to know the frequency of some species appearing in sample of each drop this this helps you in calculation of species diversity of your same and abundance of species which you may not be able estimate otherwise
