  1. The area that my parents live in is really bad with fleas. They told the vet this and he gave them a brand of heart worm preventative that also controls intestinal worms and fleas. The way it was explained to me is that a flea is still able to get on the dog and bite it, but as soon as it does, it is going to die. One problem that may present itself with this is that the treatment is rather expensive (i think it was over $90 for just one of the dogs.) Also, the flea drops and a flea collar couldn't hurt. Where I live, we don't have a flea problem but we still used the flea drops and flea collars on our dog.

Also, you can treat the yard with something like Seven Dust (or a similar product that is geared towards killing fleas and ticks, DO NOT let your animals get into it, it will make them sick, possibly kill them.)

As above mentioned, giving the dog a bath with Dawn Dish soap will kill the fleas, just make sure that you get ALL of the soap off, or your dogs will have very irritated skin.

Anyway, washing your dogs, treating the yard, and the flea preventatives will help, for sure!

    Good luck!

  2. Go to your vet and get a thing called capstar. It's a pill that you give your dogs and within four or five hours it will kill all of the adult fleas. The frontline should be able to take care of the eggs and larva after that. Sometimes with frontline, it can't handle a sudden infestation. Also treat your house and/or yard for fleas. There is this stuff called siphotrol that works wonders!

  3. Hey,

firstly get a flea comb and comb them through getting as many out as you can. you can also get flea shampoos which will get rid of most of the fleas - you can most probably get them from pet stores or even purchase them online?  and flea combs dont cost too much either =)

  4. talk to your vet, and try to keep them company.

    good luck!

  6. I know that's miserable for you and your dogs.  The only thing I can think of is to try Advantage for a change, get it from the vet. Sorry I don't have a miracle cure for you.

  7. I would suggest spreading cedar shavings around . They repel all kinds of bugs, including fleas.

  8. A lot of these solutions sound good, especially taking them to the vet.  If you have not hit them with frontline + for awhile it may be time to hit them again.  We've found most of the older chemicals to be useless in controlling fleas.  Frontline uses the active ingredient fipronil which is moderately effective but we have had good luck with Advantage which has imidacloprid as its active ingredient.  This is one of the newest class of insecticides and is actually derived from a neurotoxin.  All natural methods have proven completely ineffective for us as have Hartz and Zodiac.  I can almost hear the fleas laughing at us.

A quick solution is simply to drown the fleas.  Fleas may be resistant to a lot of chemicals but drowning gets the adults every time.  Be sure to spray them down with something afterwards though, or fleas can jump right back on them once they get outside.  Hold your dogs face out of the water and reassure them, though, or they will freak out (very important for my lady's wolf mastiff hybrid).  Also be sure to hold the rest of the dog under water for at least 2 minutes to get all the fleas.  Dawn may help in this.

    Hope this helps.

  9. If you have been giving them Frontline monthly and they still have fleas, you need to take them to the vet.  It sounds like they may have an allergy to the flea bite as well (see attached source)

It is very important that the flea medication be given as directed during the flea season.  As well, all bedding in and outside needs to be sprayed or washed to avoid infestation indoors (see attached source).

I have been using Revolution on my animals which works beautifully, because it kills the eggs, larvae and adult fleas.  Ask your vet about it (source attached).

    Good luck

  10. I was using that as well and didn't think it worked as good as.......believe it or not DAWN dish soap!. It may sounds strange but it really gets rid of the fleas. I was really amazed. I would not use that everytime but just in your situation with them having them really bad. I don't have that problem any longer since I have moved. I hope this helps you and hope your dogs will stop itching soon!
