does a density more than 1g/mL

mean it have to be a liquid? or can it be like a rock or something?

and whats a mixture that has been seperated by some other method than filtration?

  1. The only way I could imagine it as a solid is a small pebble, not sure about the second one, maybe somthing with magnetics


  2. Someone else just had the same question.

    Water has a density of 1g/mL - so anything that sinks when put in water will have a density greater than that.  Examples are a chunk of iron, most rocks, etc.  It could also be a liquid - if you combined a liquid with density more than 1 g/mL and water in a glass, the water would be the top layer.

    Another way to separate mixtures is to take advantage of different boiling points.  You can separate salt water by boiling it - the water will evaporate (you could catch the steam and condense it to get the water back if you wanted), and the salt will be left in the container.  You can also separate mixtures of two liquids like water and ethanol - ethanol has a lower boiling point, so it'd boil off before the water would.  This method is called fractional distillation.
