Plenette Pierson, Maya Moore, Iziane Castro Marques: Top performers from WNBA’s 5th June games
Only two games took place in the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) on 5th June, 2011. Let us briefly overview the contributions made by players in those games and see whose performance really made a difference on the night:
New York Liberty 94 vs. Atlanta Dream 88
Plenette Pierson’s game-high 25
Plenette Pierson scored a game-high 25 points as the New York Liberty beat the Atlanta Dream 94-88. Pierson also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, shooting 11-for-17 from the field and 3-for-4 from free throw line.
Sidney Spencer’s magical shot of the night
New York Liberty guard Sidney Spencer played for only five minutes late in the game and took only one shot, but she stole the night with her only shot of the game.
With her team trailing by 79-77 and just three seconds to go in the fourth quarter, Spencer found the space and she knocked down an open 10-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime. The shot completely shifted the momentum in Liberty’s favour and they outscored the Dream 15-9 in O.T. to seal their first victory of the season.
Iziane Castro Marques’ team-high 19
Iziane Castro Marques led Atlanta Dream with 19 points, shooting 5-for-7 from free throw line. Castro scored 12 of her points in the first half.
Sancho Lyttle’s game-high 11 rebounds
Atlanta forward Sancho Lyttle added 18 points on the night and played a huge role on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds. Lyttle also dished out five assists and made four steals in the defeat.
Minnesota Lynx 86 vs. Los Angeles Sparks 69
Maya Moore’s home debut
The number one draft pick Maya Moore ended with 16 points in her home debut as Minnesota Lynx walked romped to their first victory of the season, by gunning down the mighty Los Angeles Sparks 86-69.
The 21-year-old had a rough first half, hitting only 1-of-5 from the field in just over 7 minutes. However, she found her rhythm in the second half and scored 14 of her 16 points in the last two quarters of the game. Moore, who scored 21 points in her WNBA debut in Los Angeles, hit two jump shots and an open three-pointer in the third as the Lynx outplayed Los Angeles 24-10.
Rebekkah Brunson’s conquers the paint
Forward Rebekkah Brunson led Minnesota’s domination on the glass and racked up game-high 15 rebounds. She also scored 10 points on a 5-for-9 field goal shooting.
