  1. We were created just above the animal so it is possable when living at the animal level one could not feel compassion.

  2. I guess it implies that sympathy is an ability unique to us human beings,therefore defining our humanity, in a way.

    Schopenhauer talked about our ability to sympathize with other people's suffering a lot and as far as I remember he worshiped it, and Nietsche condemned it as an ability that increases our weakness.

  3. it just means that if you are human, you will care about people who suffer. if you don't, you don't have a heart.

They may see it as a weakness, a defensive mechanism and refuse to even acknowledge it, so they don't feel pain either. In so doing, they also bock out the natural ability to love and be loved. : (
