  1. People need to understand the intent of what they are doing, Understanding the history and the workings of the subject at hand fulfills a man's curiosity and offers him a basis for action.

    example:

In order to learn to drive a person needs an idea of why traffic laws exist  and licensing is required. One needs a basic understanding of how a car operates. Finally one needs to be able to evaluate how helpful knowing how to drive will be.Then one is ready for the mechanics of learning to operate a vehicle.

  2. in simple terms:

"Adults don't need to know what they're doing when doing something."

In ways, it means that adults are wise and already understand most things by experiences they have had. So...common sense plays along with this.

    Here is a scenario:

Say a kid sees an ad that says "YOU HAVE WON A MILLION DOLLARS, CLICK HERE TO CLAIM PRIZE" on a website. He believes the ad, clicking on it. The kid trusts the internet, because he has never found a wrong answer from using its abilities. As the kid grows older, he does a report on why the sky is blue, turns in the report using information from the internet, and fails--he has found a wrong answer after all this time! From that experience, he now knows the internet isn't always right. He has gained knowledge.
