I worked for many years in health care in both residential/institutional settings and in the community including providing palliative care for the dieing.

When my dog was very old she became frailer and frailer but so long as she was happy and not in pain I continued to give her the tablets that kept her heart strong.  There came a point when her organs began to fail, she couldn't eat or drink properly and she was in pain and distress.  I called the vet out who said she's old and dieing, which I knew.  We took the decision to not let her suffer any more.  It was heartbreaking but I knew it was better than letting her go on for days waiting for the end.

We don't afford human beings the same dignity and release.  I have had human beings begging to be released from their pain and suffering forced to endure treatments that kept them going.  I have seen bodies kept going long after the spirit has given up.

If I had done to my dog what I have seen done to human beings I would be guilty of cruelty.

I don't think you can ever have a blanket policy on euthanasia, each case must be taken on it's own merits.  I do believe that euthanasia and assisted suicide should be an option open to end extreme suffering or to hasten an inevitable death.

Suicide is not illegal - so the will to kill self is not illegal it is seen as a human right.

When a person no longer has the capacity to kill themselves it is illegal for another to assist - this seems a vicious cruelty denying a person their right to live to the point that they themselves want before making that decision - There are people willing to assist who dont have that kind of conscience and if you have enough money you can travel to get this assistance - So we allow some people to have this privilege and not others.

The political  decision is based on whom it would most upset to make the law to allow assisted suicide (religious bodies)  rather than the individual in that predicament.

this is outrageous to make some people suffer for someone elses sensitivities and principles.
