  1. You may not need to format and reinstall windows to fix the problem.  But if you choose to do so, the steps are pretty easy.  First you will need your Windows CD or the restoration disc that came with your computer (Dell and Gateway often have these discs).  Put in the CD and restart the computer.  It should prompt you with a menu that has an option to start Windows setup from the CD.  That is what you want to do.  It will load the windows setup program.  Follow the steps on the screen (ie press F8 to agree to the License agreement) until you reach a screen asking you which drive and/or partition to install windows on.  One of the partitions in the list holds all of your C drive, including the windows installation.  Look for one of the type NTFS.  select that one with the arrow keys and press L (i think) to delete the selected partition.  Confirm that you wish to do this on the next screen.  WARNING: From this point on your entire computer will be erased. Continue only if this is what you want to do!  Then select the unpartitioned space that it has freed on the drive, and on the next screen choose the option to format it with NTFS(Quick).  Your Hard drive will be formatted and the computer will restart.  Then it will load a familiar desktop environment with your mouse pointer.  Just follow the rest of the installation wizard to finish installing windows.

These instructions are for Windows XP, the retail version from microsoft.  Sadly, I haven't had a chance to play with Windows Vista yet, but I imagine the steps are similar.  If you have a restoration CD, the steps may be slightly easier, as they tend to guide you through the whole process.  Use the option to restore your computer to the factory state.  Good luck!  I'll be happy to post follow-ups or answer more questions.

  2. you don't have to format, get rid of the viruses/spyware

  3. pop in or download windows xp....change your CMOS settings to boot from cd to do that u must reboot your computer and during the memory count press del..thats what it usually is...it might be something different just read the screen and whateva is setup go to that. After you change the boot sequence to cd another screen will load and say press any button to boot from cd. press it.. a blue screen will pop up after that it will run for about 3 minutes. then delete the partition on your hard drvie....then create a new one. after that hit install windows after that a format menu will come up. when it does do ntfs...when it finishes it will reboot. dont boot from the cd. windows will come up and then u will have to configure your settings which is easy and insert your product key also easy. its simple the computer will prompt you through the entire thing

  4. Before you decide to reformat your hard drive, make sure you back up any files that are absolutely important to you. Then insert your Windows XP disc in the drive. When the window pops up asking if you want to install Windows, just close it out and shut down your computer completely (do not restart) with the disc still in the drive. When you turn your computer back on, you should see a DOS prompt asking to boot from disc. Hit enter (or Y) for yes. At that point, you should see a blue screen that begins the Windows installation. During this time, you will be given the choice to delete the information on the current drive and reformat it. Go for the full reformat to make sure everything gets deleted. After the reformatting process is complete, Windows will re-install on your computer. Once that's done, and you're able to set up your user name then install your internet provider software first if necessary. You will need to install any software needed to be able to get onto the internet. Do not worry about installing other software because you will need to do the Windows updates first. After you install ALL the updates (and there will be a lot of them) then you can install all of the software that you once had on your system. But you definitely need to install an anti-virus software program on your system so that you won't have the virus problem again. All of this will take time, so you want to do this when you know you can be home for a few hours.
