  1. Like the other responder to this question, I'd suggest either solidWorks, 3D Studio Max or Maya - but all three of these are very expensive.  Autodesk (the maker of 3D Studio and Maya) offer student versions that are much less expensive than the commercial ones, but they still cost a lot.

If you're just looking for a way to do a quick mock-up illustration and don't need to worry about a lot of detail like textures, reflections, etc., why not try Google SketchUp?  It's what they use to make the models of buildings, bridges and other structures on Google Earth.  There is a free version available, also.

Finally, there is a pretty robust free 3D software available called "Blender" (www.blender.org).  I don't have any direct experience with it but I hear it is very good.

Most of these packages should be able to output generic 3D files, and render to JPG or PNG format for easy universal image viewing.

  2. Solidworks- sort of a 3d version of CAD

3d Studio- for making animations, rendering your images to make them look pro. You can use it sort of like Solidworks, for creating models, and then add textures, such as glass, plastic, etc, to make it appear realistic. Lots of tutorials on the internet.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Use Blender, its free.
