  1. If your DVD player has an hdmi output, then use it to the tvs hdmi input. If it doesn't, use the red blue and green connections to the red, blue and green connections on the back of your tv.  You will need a set of component cables to do this. Component cables are colored with red, green and blue ends with what are called RCA connectors. If you don't have them, any electronics store will but you can get a better deal online if you don't mind waiting (www.monoprice.com).

You will also need to hook up the red and white audio cables. Make sure you don't confuse the red audio cable with the red video cable. Also, make sure you hook the audio up to the same input as you did the component (video)cables. You will have to turn your tv set to that input to watch a dvd

By the way, asking is not silly at all.

  2. Forget the yellow video cable (Composite .. you get a lousy picture)

Get a component cable (3 RCA connectors on each end coded red/blue/green) and connect the cable to the red/blue/green ports on the DVD player and one of the inputs on the HDTV following the colour coding --- that takes care of the picture. Now, connect sound using a digital coax (orange RCA) or optical (usually black square plug) cable (or if unavailable use the red/white RCA cables) from the DVD player to the HDTV. Connect the video and sound to the same input (e.g. input 1) on the TV so when you select that input you get both sound and picture.

If you don't get picture or sound you may have to adjust a setting on the menu for the TV or DVD player to "tell it" which connection should be active.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Do you have HDMI also?  If your TV and DVD player have HDMI then I would use an HDMI cable as it would connect both video and audio with one cable.

If you don't have HDMI then do the following.....

So as not to confuse you,  it would be best if you remove all connections between your DVD player and HDTV.

Then you start by hooking up the video from the DVD to the TV.  Find the Red, Blue, and Green RCA cables.  Hook that up from the DVD player to the HDTV.

Next you will hook up audio by locating and using the Red and White RCA cables.  Hook that up from the DVD player to the HDTV.

Finally you will test your setup.  Turn on the DVD player and HDTV.  Get to the menu screen of the DVD player.  If it has the option, set the DVD player output to PROGRESSIVE scan.

If this doesn't work, then you will have to provide make and model numbers of your DVD player and TV so more research can be done.

  4. The colors of the jacks can help, but concentrate mainly on the labeling.  In addition, concentrate on one connection at a time.

Plus, make sure you connect the player within one group of jacks only.  For instance, if you are going to connect the DVD player to "component 1," keep all connections of one device to the TV within that group.

The green and blue connections are two of three used for component video.  For component video, you need three cables for the video signal.

First, connect a cable to the Y (green) jack on the player and then connect the other end to the Y jack on the TV.

Second, connect a cable to the Pb (blue) jack on the player and then connect the other end to the Pb jack on the TV.

Third, connect a cable to the Pr (red) jack on the player and then connect the other end to the Pr jack on the TV.

Then, for sound on the TV, connect the left (white) jack on the player and then connect the other end to the left channel jack on the TV.

Then, connect the right (red) jack on the player and then connect the other end to the right channel jack on the TV.

In summary, connect Y to Y, Pb to Pb, Pr to Pr, L to L, and R to R.

Again, pay attention to the labeling of the jacks so you won't mix them up, particularly the red ones.

And, don't forget, concentrate on one connection at a time.
