  1. Plugins to browser are like softwares to OS. They add functionality that may not needed by particular people but maybe important for others. So just like not everyone need Photoshop in their PC, not everyone need Flash in their browser. They range from simple multimedia experience to complex stuff like download manager or FTP client.

    The thing about Firefox is that mos of it's add-ons are inherently multiplatform (run under any platform that support Firefox). Other browser usually have more limited add-ons, usually only essential like Flash, some cool 3D web, etc)

    Just install what you need, when needed.

Applications support plugins for many reasons. Some of the main reasons include: enabling third-party developers to create capabilities to extend an application, to support features yet unforeseen, to reduce the size of an application, and to separate source code from an application because of incompatible software licenses.
